~
~~HILLS

MEMORANDUM

DATE:

October 27, 2008

TO:

Mayor & City Council

FROM:

Meagan Beekman, City Planner

~

SUBJECT: Joint Powers Agreement between the City of Arden Hills and the Ramsey County
GIS Users Group

Back2:round

Since at least 1998, the City of Arden Hills has been a member of the Ramsey County Geographic
Information Users Group (RCGISUG). The RCGISUG was formed in 1995 to provide member
cities and organizations throughout Ramsey County with a centralized and efficient source of
electronic geographic data. Since the RCGISUG processes geographic information for the entire
County, the users group is able to provide the information in a standardized format and is more
affordable than would otherwise be possible.

City Staff uses the geographic data provided by the RCGISUG on almost a day to day basis in such
activities as planning cases, code enforcement, creating custom maps, and comprehensive planning.
The City is provided with updated information on CDs on a regular basis, which allows us to
manipulate the data and create our own maps as needed. Some of the information provided by the
RCGISUG is available online at http://www.ramseygis.org/index.html.

Discussion

The 2009 membership fee for the RCGISUG is $971.96. This amount has not changed since the
previous joint powers agreement in 2006. The dues were included in the 2009 Community
Development Budget. The joint powers agreement must be approved to be an official member of the
user group.

1

City of Arden Hills
City Council Meetingfor October 27,2008

\\Metro-inet.us\ardenhills\Planning\City Council Memos\2008\RCGIS JPA\102708 RCGISUGJPA Memo to CC.doc
