<br /> <br />~ <br /> <br /> <br />l!\1lIIIIS <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />April 27, 2009 <br /> <br />TO: <br /> <br />Mayor and City Council <br />Ron Moorse, City Administrator <br /> <br />FROM: <br /> <br />Greg Hoag, Public Works Director <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />Lift Station 7 Pump Purchase <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />At the April 20, 2009 Council Work Session, the pump issues at Lift Station #7 were discussed with <br />Council. Both of the existing "chopper" pumps are in need of major repair. These repairs are <br />estimated to cost $11,900 for each pump. The cost to replace each of these pumps with a new <br />"chopper" pump would be $18,600. Because the cost to repair each pump is well above 50% of the <br />cost of replacement, it is recommended the pumps be replaced rather than repaired. Staff has <br />consulted with several pump vendors, as well as an engineer with Bolton and Menk, regarding the <br />issues with the pumps at this lift station, and regarding an optimal solution. It has been determined <br />that the "chopper" pumps are not an adequate solution for this lift station. Regular submersible <br />pumps and an in-line grinder are a better solution to treat the materials being discharged from <br />Presbyterian Homes. <br /> <br />Based on the above information, Council directed that the purchase of the two 10 HP regular <br />submersible pumps be placed on the April 27 Council meeting agenda, as part of the overall solution <br />which involves the installation of an in-line grinder to pre-process the objectionable material being <br />discharged by Presbyterian Homes. <br /> <br />Staff will be sending a letter to Presbyterian Homes regarding the on-going issues, as well as to <br />inform them of the payment needed for replacement of the current pumps, as per the agreement. <br />Staff will also arrange for a meeting with representatives from Presbyterian Homes, the Mayor, and <br />City Staff to discuss how and where to install an inline grinder, which will be the responsibility of <br />Presbyterian Homes. <br /> <br />REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION <br />Authorize Staff to purchase two new 10 horsepower submersible pumps from Electric Pump <br />Company located in Bloomington MN, for a cost not to exceed a total of $18,500 for both pumps, <br />plus the cost of a licensed electrician to perform the electrical change over in the control panel, to be <br />reimbursed by Presbyterian Homes per the agreement of 2008. <br />
