EN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: September 13, 2010
T4: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
Patrick Klaers, City Administrator
FROM: Terry Maurer, Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Valley-Rich Company, Inc. to Raise Two
Sanitary Sewer Manholes
Backround

With the recent sanitary sewer lining proj ect it was discovered that two sanitary sewer
manholes on the segments to be lined where not properly constructed to the ground
surface when originally built. These two manholes need to be raised to the ground surface
to provide access to the sewer lines.
Discussion
The two sanitary sewer manholes in question are located at 1662 Lake Johanna Blvd and
in a rear yard location in the Arden Place/Siems Court neighborhood. Televising of the
manholes indicated they are both cone sections on concrete base slabs. The Lake
Johanna Blvd manhole is approximately 5-6 feet low and the Arden Place/Siems Court
manhole is approximately 2-3 feet low. In bath cases the repair will involve adding a
concrete barrel section, rings and a casting. The quote for the Lake Johanna Blvd
location includes all restoration because the manhole is located in a bituminous driveway.
With the Arden Place/Siems Court location City crews will be doing the turf restoration
after the manhole is raised.
Staff received two quotes for this work. The low quote received from Valley- Rich,
Company, Inc. who has done this type of work for the City previously and a second quote
from Lametti and Sons, Inc. the contractor for the sewer lining project.
This work would be paid for from the Sanitary Sewer Utility budget line item for
Maintenance of Utilities. This line item was budgeted at $44,000 for 2010 and currently
has approximately $28,000 unspent.
Council Action Requested
,
Approve the hiring of Valley-Rich Company, Inc., for the raising of two sanitary sewer
manholes at an estimated cost of $12,500.
City Council Meeting
\Metro-inet\ardenhillsAdmin\CouncilAgendas & Packet Information\2010\9-13 -10 RegularPacket Information\Memo-lift
manhole cover.doc
