Requested Action
Motion to authorize staff to work with the Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee (PTRC}
to establish guidelines, advertise and facilitate a mural contest for the retaining wall along
the new CP Rail Trail Crossing on Old �nelling Ave.

At their November 16, 2010 regular meeting, the PTRC Chair initiated a discussion on the
idea of a City sponsored art contest for a mural on the retaining wall far the new patnway
under the CP Rail Bridge on Old Snelling Ave. The commitiee was receptive to the idea
and suggested that this type of contest could produce an artistic mural that cauld assist in
deterring graff ti artists from tagging this area. The coznmittee volunteered to work with
staff on guidelines, advertising and facilitation oi the contest. Th� PTRC uzlanimous�y
recommended that the City sponsor an art contest for a mural on the retaining wall along
the new CP Rail trai� crossing on Old Snelling Ave.
Staff suggests the following process for the contesfi:

Staff contacts Canadian Pacific to discuss contest and
receive railroad authorization to proceed.
PTRC wo�ks on guidelines and contest details.
Contest is advertised in 1oca1 newspap�r, at colleges, at
Mounds View Higk� Schoo�, City newsletter and City
website.
