Requested Action
Review proposed sign design and provide direction to Staff on next steps.
Background
The City Council and the Economic Development Commission have been working on Gateway
Signs for several years. The installation of gateway signs is a Council goal for 2012. The
estimated time to complete the goal is three years, beginning in 2012.
At the December 19, 2011, the City Council discussed gateway sign installation options for
2012, and reviewed past discussions regarding gateway signs.
The 2012-2016 CIP identifies $140,000 over three years for installation of six gateway signs. It
has been assumed that the cost of each gateway sign, with installation, lighting, and landscaping
would be approximately $25,000. In 2012, the CIP designates $65,000 for gateway sign
installation which assumes two signs at a cost of $25,000 each and a sign at Arden Plaza for a
cost of $15,000 (the developer has agreed to pay for the sign base).
At the May 21, 2012, work session, the Council reviewed the sign locations suggested by the
Economic Development Committee, and provided direction to Staff on preferred design options
for the gateway sign. The Council also directed Staff to move forward with obtaining a proposed
design and quote for a sign which would be located at Arden Plaza at the intersection of
Lexington Avenue and County Road E. The Council's consensus was to focus on completing
one sign at this location, and then working towards a possible second sign for the triangle parcel
at County Road D and Lake Johanna Boulevard.

Sign Design
At their May 21, 2012, meeting, that City Council directed Staff to work with Fourth Dimension
Signs and come back with a refined design for a gateway sign at County Road E and Lexington
Avenue. Staff met with Fourth Dimension and provided the parameters given by the Council in
terms of the design of the sign. Staff also reviewed gateway signs from other communities
around the Country.
Fourth Dimension reworked their designs and has provided a concept that is based on the
Council's May 21St discussion. The proposed sign has a slightly curved top and solid base. The
curves of the sign backing mimic the curves of the Arden Hills logo. The backing for the
lettering of the sign has been done is a slightly lighter shade than those presented at the last
meeting, and is of a stone finish. The base of the sign would be aluminum. The stone finishing
would wrap around to the back of the sign as well, though there would be no lettering on the
back of the sign.
Fourth Dimension did provide two slightly different options; one includes no side columns, and
the other shows what the sign would look like if metal columns were included. The purpose of
the two iterations is to show Council options of what might be possible. Either design can be
altered further if the Council deems it necessary.
Fourth Dimension has been asked to provide a cost estimate for the sign. The quote would also
include the cost of providing LED lighting at the base of the sign. The quote should be ready to
present to the Council at the Monday work session.
