CALL TO ORDER AGENDA ITEMS 1.A.Respectful Workplace Training Sheila Krejci Documents:MEMO.PDF, AGENDA ITEM MEMORANDUM DATE: May 20, 2013 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Patrick Klaers, City Administrator SUBJECT: Respectful Workplace Training Background/Discussion First, thanks to everyone for completing the DiSC profile! Providing appropriate training for staff and the City Council in the areas of "hostile work environment" and "sexual harassment" is one of the high priority goals that the City Council established for the Director of Finance and Administrative Services, Sue Iverson. The desired outcome from this training includes helping to foster a healthy workplace environment and to reinforce with everyone what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior. The City has contracted with Sheila Krejci, of Sheila K Consulting, Inc., for this training. Sheila is a consultant with the League of MN Cities and has worked with Councils and staffs throughout the state including the cities of Fridley, Apple Valley, Mound, Rosemount, Northfield, New Ulm, Golden Valley, Rockford, and Eden Prairie. Attached for your information is Sheila's biography (from 2011). The City staff training was conducted on April 25, 2013. Because the City Council is elected and serve as the City policy makers, the training session for the Council will be different than the one completed by staff, however it is an extension of the theme regarding the establishment of a healthy workplace and improved work relationships. The "Everything DiSC Workplace" profile is a personal assessment tool used to improve work th productivity, teamwork and communication. The following two paragraphs are from the May 8 email that Sheila sent out to you: As leaders and role models for staff and community of Arden Hills, you'll have a unique opportunity to explore your typical workplace style and behaviors. You'll also consider the working styles of each of your colleagues on the Council and leadership team leveraging a Group MAP with all Everything DiSC Working styles. 12 Page of Everything DiSC Workplace is a simple yet powerful tool providing insights into our behaviors when approaching problems, making decisions and influencing others in our daily work. The resulting report contains multiple strategies for leveraging the strengths of our styles while minimizing the potential blind spots that tend to get in our way. The plan for the May 20th work session is for the first part of the meeting to be spent with the Council and Staff Directors. The last part of the work session will just be with the Council and me. This work session on May 20th should be a lot of fun and a fabulous learning experience. A follow up to the training session will be scheduled for the July 15th work session when everyone can attend. (Councilmember McClung and Public Works Director Maurer will not be at th the May 20 work session.)
