SUBJECT: Motion to Appoint Chris Gabiou to the Communications Committee
BACKGROUND
This past summer, the City hired Chris Gabiou as an intern. During his two-month internship,
Chris performed a number of duties, ranging from front desk coverage to processing job
applications and assisting with preparation of the City's first Popular Financial Report. Chris
also has previous work experience as a temporary employee with Parks and Recreation.
Mr. Gabiou, a resident of Arden Hills, is presently a senior at St. John's University, majoring in
communications. During his internship, we tapped into his talents. He worked with the
Communications Committee and wrote some articles. The Committee asked him to consider
joining the committee, and he agreed to do so.
DISCUSSION
As mentioned,Mr. Gabiou is currently a senior in college. However, he has expressed interest in
serving on the committee, and has already begun his participation. He has attended committee
meetings and plans to drive down for the monthly meetings regularly. His studies in
communication bring added talents to the committee, and his initiative in participating while still
in school is impressive. Staff was very pleased with Mr. Gabiou's work performance as an
intern, and believes he will be a great added resource for the Communications Committee.
Until recently Councilmember Holmes, who is Council Liaison to the committee, has been
serving as Chair/Editor. The committee has recommended that Mr. Gabiou take over that role,
and he has indicating his willingness to serve. The guidelines for city commissions and
committees indicate that the Mayor shall appoint committee chairs, with Council approval.
