HomeMy WebLinkAboutNovember-December 197611 Published by The Arden Association Another recent prank deserves front page attention: The theft of the flag was shameful, what follows could have been fatal, and we hope pranksters will consider that even innocent mischief can contribute to dire results no one wants on his conscience. Recently a member of our community became seriously ill at home requiring immediate transfer to a hospital. The fam- ily called an ambulance. Upon arriving in the neighborhood, the ambulance driver could not locate the house. The street signs at the corners had been turned, thus directing him up and down the wrong streets. Two Arden Hills patrol cars answered the driver's summons for help in locating the house. All this resulted in a 15 -minute delay in providing the stricken person with the necessary emergency medical attention. In an emergency situation, 15 minutes can affect survival. I am happy to report our resident is home a- gain, after a period of hospitalization, but hope the episode will remind all that the price of pranks can be high ...... *****The Police Department has been calling our attention to the importance of making our homes identifiable with highly visible house numbers, mail -box numbers or names. Although this was not the problem in the above case, this seems an appropriate time to remember the time could come for any of us when we need to be located..... 'Committee appointments will be made by Council during December, to be effect- ive January 1, 1977 and the Crier has been asked to call your attention to this. This kind of civic spirit on the part of our business community - you recall the Coast -to -Coast • • Hardware store donated the first flag - is deserving of special thanks. Ward Hanson, our newly -elected Council member, has been appointed by Council to fill the Council seat vacated by Bill Feyereisen for the remaind- er of 1976..... Arden Hills voter turn -out at the recent elections was high, with 82% of U the registered voters casting their ballots. Fifty election judges worked their pencils to the nubs; one team was stationed at all polling places be- fore they opened at 8:00 A.M. and worked through until after closing at 8:00 , P.M. - a long day. The teams of counters began their work then, a job which took until 3:00 or 4:00 A.M., and in one location until nearly 8:00 A.M. the morning of November 3. Clerk/Administrator Charlotte McNiesh says she admir- ed the efficiency and good humor of these hard working ladies. Congratulations to the winners - Incumbent Mayor Henry Crepeau, Incumbent Councilman Jim Wingert and new Councilman Ward Hanson. (Although after a recent Council meeting that ran until 2:30 A.M., Ward may be wondering if Condolences aren't in order.) I Words of appreciation are due to the candidates who ran and did not win (Doug Barthany, James Luban and Joseph Talcott). Their sincere interest and enthus� iasm in serving the Villager and the time and effort put into their campaigns deserves to be noted. There are 4,281 registered voters in Arden Hills; of these 3,522 voted. Of the 3,522, 681 people registered on Election Day. This extremely high num- ber of registrations on the day of elections accounts for some of the delays , you may have encountered at the polling places as the registration process requires considerably more time than the simple ballot -marking. In addition, although the number of voters expected to rec3ister on that day is unpredict- able, it is a problem factor affecting assumed man -power requirements, num- ber of ballots to have available, etc., so obviously pre -registration simpli- fies Election Day for everyone. .... Progress at Arden Manor - possible resolutions to problems there expect- ed at December 13 Council Meeting..... I .... Revision of the Snowmobile Ordinance - Council discussion continues. Final passage hoped for sometime in December...._ ..... Effective January 1, 1977 McGuire's Liquor License passes from Innkeep- ers of Minnesota, Inc. to Entrust Management Co. of Minnesota. (The name of "McGuire's" will remain the same.)..... ..... The Lexington Avenue upgrading controversy - "REAL", a citizens commit- tee composed of primarily Roseville citizens, but with support from some Arden Hills residents along Lexington Avenue, has been very vocal in objecting to the widening of Lexington. Ramsey County is prevented, legally, from pro- ceeding with this project without approval of the municipalities through which the road goes (Roseville; A. H., & Shoreview) and the municipalities, respond- ing to resident pressures, have not given the approval. The complexities of funding are also involved - such as, "Funds are available to us now but won't be later" and so on and so on in mysterious, changing circles. It's a mess... ..... Skyline Builders was given approval sometime ago to dump fill into its land along County Road F next to the bus barns. The agreement was that if Skyline came in with a suitable development plan for the area prior to Dec- ember 1, 1976, the fill would be allowed to remain. If, however, they failed to propose a plan for the land which was acceptable, the land fill had to be removed. Skyline has not yet presented an acceptable plan to the Planning Commission and December 1 is NOW..... *'***Cardiac Pacemakers has been granted approval for additional road -ways and parking. It is expected C.P. will soon approach the Planning Commission with plans for an additional building..... ..... Engineering feasibility studies being made for sewer and water in the Karth Lake area ..... ..... The Minnesota Legislature charged the Metropolitan Council with the task of establishing a committee on ways to increase modest -cost private housing in the metropolitan area. As a result of this legislative directive, the "Modest -Cost Private Housing Advisory Committee" was established last May. This Committee's report and recommendations has recently been submitted to local municipalities. The Arden Hills Council is preparing, in resolution form, a response to this report, which will be forwarded to the Chairman of ' the above Committee, and which takes issue with certain analyses, conclusions and recommendations contained there -in. The Committee's report is multi -paged and obviously cannot be covered fully here. However, should the Legislature support the recommendations of the Metropolitan Council's sub -committee, mun- icipalities such as Arden Hills would be legally bound to adopt certain man- datory inclusions in their zoning ordinances, such as, for example, reduction ' of minimum lot sizes to 7,500 sq. ft. and street frontages to 60..... A challenge to the autonomy and independent right -to -self -govern for munici- palities.....?..... ' ..And - THE ARDEN HILLS ZONING ORDINANCE IS FINISHED AND READY FOR ITS PUBLIC DEBUT (Public Hearing, that is).
