If you have a tree that you want to take down yourself, there is a disposal site in Shoreview at I -35W and 85th Ave. NE (the North 'C N County Line.) Currently it is open Monday R through Friday from 8sOO a.m. to 8:Oo p.m. and • Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays. However, these hours are Isubject to change. The disposal fee is $5.00 for a pickup truck Eload or a 2 -wheeled trailer, and $10.00 for a small dump truck or 4 -wheeled trailer. Please Rcut your trees and branches into suitable lengths 0 0 a for loading. • For more information, please call the Ramsey County Parks and Open Space Department at 770-1361 PROBLEM IN THE PARK The perennial spring problem of young people gathering in Tony Schmidt Park, at all hours of the day and night, is back again this year with a vengeance Why the problem should be so much greater this year than last is a puzzle, un- less the fact that Shoreview has clamped down vigorously on such gatherings in Island Lake Park has made a difference to Arden Hills. The Arden Hills rule 'against having liquor in our parks seems to be having little effect; the kids simply hide the stuff when the police appear. The police do respond promptly when called and the crowds disperse ---for an hour or so. Discussion of thisproblem at the Council meeting centered on better enforce- ment. One Councilman would like to see a police car just parked in the area to let everyone know the Law is around. Someone else said that one car cannot possibly handle 300 young people and suggested that perhaps a few dogs would help. The Mayor seemed to think that the problem would diminish as the summer wears on; graduation time is always the worst. I One concern is that these crowds of young people are keeping ordinary families from using the boat launch, picnic area, or beach. If anyone has felt intimidated in any Way by this situation, please give me a call. I understand the language these kids use is enough to curl your hair. i LEXINGTON AVENUE Our family has purchased a new (used) car, so my son took it for the ulti- mate in a road torture tests a drive along Lexington Avenue from County Road D to E at the maximum speed limit. The springs and shocks are still vibrating. Because of the business developments going on around F and Lexington, AH has asked the County to push up its plans for the Lexington improvements to 1981 if possible. The question of who will pay for the proposed stop -and -go light at F is sort of interestings Lexington is a County road, but half of the intersection is in Shoreview and half in Arden Hills. AH's share of the cost will depend upon how the rules are interpreted. IBUDGET REQUESTS July 27 is the deadline for submitting Village budget requests to our I Clerk-Administrator. Remember where the money comes from and be concerned! SUMMER PARKS AND RECREATION The summer playground activities for kids is being held in various parka around Arden Hills and looks like a lot of fun. There will be two play leaders at each site, and pre -registration for your child is NOT necessary. In fact, ' the program is designed to accommodate the irregular attendance which often accompanies vacation time. Included in the activities are crafts, active games hiking, cook -outs, etc. ---something for everyone. Here is the schedule, come whenever you can: For ages 4 through 6s Monday and Wednesday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to Noon at Florall, Ingerson, and Arden Manor Parks Tuesday and Friday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to Noon at Freeway, Sampson, and Valentine Parks For ages 7 and overt Monday and Wednesday afternoons, 1s00 p.m. to 4s00 p.m. at Freeway, Sampson, and Valentine Parks Tuesday and Friday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Floral, Ingerson, and Arden Manor Parks ' There will also be adventure trips (new Zoo, Science Museum, Apple River, etc.) on Thursdays. These trips do require pre -registration and will, of course, cost something for admission and transportation. Check at your local playground at the times listed above for further information on these excursions. For teens and adults, Arden Hills is offering both tennis and golf instruc-1 1 tion this summer. The golf lessons are on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, 6 one- hour classes for $12.00. The tennis classes are Mondays or Tuesdays, 6 one- hour adult sessions for $10.50. SEWER OR WATER EMERGENCIES If you are beset with a sewer or water problem on a weekend or holiday,, ' call the Sheriff's Office at 484=33$6 and they will dispatch a man who is on call for the Public Works Department. "UNBUILDABLE" LOT More on that "unbuildable" lot on Lake Johanna: the Planning Commission recommended that the applicant submit a plan for a house which would utilize the same portion of the site that is now used by the existing structures. That way the owner won't need to ask for any more variances for the new building than already exist on the old one. WYNRIDGE DEVELOPMENT Some discussion was held at the Planning Commission concerning the proposed names for several of the streets in the new Wynridge development. (This is the area just east of Hamline and south of Amble Road.) Some of the planned names are Wyncrest Lane, Wyncrest Court, and Wynridge Drive. The majority of the Planning Commission members felt that such a similarity of names causes confusion; however, one member said she thinks that name similarity identifies an area and actually reduces confusion. The Council will eventually make the decision. There are 52 lots in this development. OTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CITY Cardiac Pacemakers is ready to start Phase III of its planned expansion. This will be another office building and will come up before the Planning Com- mission shortly. Also, Eastside Beverage has found it necessary to expand already, as has I.C. Systems, When I.C. Systems built on Lexington in 1972, it was thought they would be set for 25 years, but already they have both parking and office space , problems. They would like to stay in Arden Hills if they can. Both the addition to the city Public Works building and the installation of water into the northwest portion of the Village are nearlycompleted. A Public Hearing will soon be scheduled on the land just north of the homes on County Road E between McDonald's and Lindey's. Last year, a proposal by Twin City Christian Homes to build retirement apartments for the elderly was turned down; this proposal is for R-1 single family dwellings. Kraus -Anderson, a building firm, is interested in an office -warehouse on part of a 5.8 acre site west of Round Lake and south of 96. They must relocate their downtown Minneapolis site immediately to make way for the domed stadium. The City Planner suggested that Kraus -Anderson discuss their proposed industrial operation with the Planning Commission before making actual application to build. Ground has been broken for the new Land 0' Lakes complex on Lexington and F, and Mutual Service has moved into its new Home Office at 2 Pine Tree Drive. Mutual rive. Mutual Service has decided not to change its name, as once bad been consideredg but instead to emphasize the MSI initials for identification. Apparently every insurance company in the world has either the word "Mutual" or "Service" in its name. (Editor's notes I can understand the problem. Whenever I tell anyone that my husband works for the Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company, they say how nice it must be to have his office here in Arden Hills now!) Because of all this building in the City (and inflation too, of course,) the total market value of all taxable real estate in AH has increased from $103 million in 1978 to $121 million in 1979 to $162 million in 1980. (These last two are estimated.) GARAGE SALES Did you know it is against City ordinance to hold a garage sale in Arden Hills without a permit? There is no fee for such a permit, and an application ,may be obtained by phone. Just call the Village Hall at 633-5676• FREEWAY RINK The Parks Committee last spring considered closing Freeway hockey rink and moving it elsewhere because of the limited parking available there. It is also an extremely small rink. (Although, my husband says when you are flooding 1 the thing in January at midnight, it seems big enough.) Anyway, after some research, the Committee decided to leave the rink where it is because of the extremely high neighborhood useage for both hockey and b roomball. It will probably not be scheduled for many league games however. WALKING TRAIL SIGNS The new signs to mark Arden Hills' walking A 'trails are really nice: wooden, about 5' tall, with both the Arden Hills logo and the inter- national symbol of a hiker. It was suggested for us armchair types that the figure resembles a cardiac patient with a cane and oxygen tank, but the Parks Director insists it's really a hiker with a climbing stick and backpack. 1POTPOURRI Public Works is in the market for a $58,000 Four Wheel Drive- Articulated 'Rubber -Tired Tractor Loader. With a name like that, no wonder it costs so much... At the Blood Drive this spring at Bethel, 192 students donated blood......The temporary emergency outlet pipe on Lake Johanna will be retained until the new overflow pipe is in place and operating ...... Ted Labuza has been appointed as a new member of the Parks and Recreation Committee...... There are 13 tennis courts in Arden Hills, not counting the ones at Bethel.., The Public Works Department is also considering the purchase of a new welder l which not only will repair metal but can be used to defrost frozen water lines in the winter... *,*The Edgewater Overlay, from Lexington to the Odd Fellows Lodge on Lake Josephine has been completed for around $4000......City Treasurer ' Donald Lamb attended a Finance Officers' Conference in Michigan in June...... Public Hearin will be held soon for water and sewer assessments in various parts of the Vil- lage. Affected residents will be notified by mail...... An inquiry about a license for a body shop has been received at the Village Hall...... All are open to the public, but it's a good idea to verify the dates and times with the Village Hall before you show up; things do I change.
