HomeMy WebLinkAboutSeptember-October 1979Published by the Arden Hills Newsletter Publication Committee No. 130 September -October 1979 WARNING Someone has been regularly stealing produce this summer from gardens in the Arden Hills Community Garden Plot, and some of the growers there use dangerous pesticides. The gentleman farmer who called me about this said that the material he uses carries a warning that plants thus treated should not be harvested or consumed for at least 5 days after spraying. (Actually, both the caller and I felt that it might serve the thief right to go ahead and devour the stuff.) Anyway, be very careful if you plan to eat .. _ stolen food. Or, better yet, let your guns are safely investigate. RIFLE PRACTICE Interesting happenings in the woods between Mutual Service and Hunter's Parks apparently someone was playing around with a high-calibre rifle one evening and managed to put a bullet through one of the walls in a home, The lady of the house found the bullet on the bedroom floor and was more than a little upset. If anyone has any ideas who is enjoying such games, let me know. the Sheriff know! And parents, please check to see that all stored away when you're not home. The kids do love to LANDMARK CHANGE The Planning Commission has -given its O.K. for the familiar "Arden Hills Antiques" sign on Highway 96 to be changed to "Bohemian Cue Service." The house there has been sold, and the new owner repairs billiard cues and gives lessons on a part-time basis. (In real life, he is an engineer for Control Data.) As usual, there was quite a discussion of the legal ramifications of changing the sign and concern over what precedent might be set. However, since the situation here is rather unique (high-speed roadway, isolated location, etc.), approval ' of the request was given. Some comment was made about the looks of the sign directly across 96 from this locations it is a large sign identifying the Arsenal. Unfortunately that is Federal property and the Arden Hills sign ordinance hasn't much clout there. PARKS AND RECREATION Included with this newsletter is your fall schedule for AH's recreational programs. Our Parks Director is also in the process of lining up some basket- ball and volleyball leagues for some of the workers in Arden Hills. There has been some discussion at the Parks Committee (and there will be more over the winter)on having a closing time for the City -owned parks. A prob- lem has arisen in AH this summer with excessive late-night use of our parks, primarily by young people. It is felt that the limited hours of the County Parks are forcing the kids to the local parks. Of course, the question arises, if we close the City parks at 9 or 10 p.m., where will the kids go then? If you have a feeling on this, give me a call. HUMAN RIGHTS The Human Rights meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4, will be on "Women and Ath- letics," Representatives from the Bethel College and Mounds View High athletic ' departments will discuss compliance with the current laws. Come and bring your concerns and questions. 7s30 p.m. at the Village Hall. SIGN ORDINANCE The proposed new sign ordinance for Arden Hills is now available and it provides hours of fascinating reading. The first 6 pages are devoted to def- initions so that we are all on the same wavelength. Then the ordinance lists' five groups of signs,from those that will require no permit at all (public signs, temporary signs such as political or garage sale, etc.) down through those signs that will be totally forbidden (billboards, animated signs, etc.). County Road , E. Industrial Structures, Shopping Centers, etc, are treated separately. If you want to take a look at this ordinance before it gets to the Council, stop at the Village Hall. While on the subject of signs, it might be mentioned that the Council has approved a temporary sign at the entrance to the Briarknoll project (Hamline and Colleen) to identify the area. OPEN HOUSE The League of Women Voters has scheduled an open house for Arden Hills on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 7s00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Village Hall. (Here's hop this letter gets to you before then!) Although there will be no bus tour as had been considered, this would be a great time to come out and check our Pub- lic Works, Fire, and Police equipment and personnel. Do bring the kids also. ' Council, Mayor, and Committee representatives will be available on an in- formal basis if you have any questions or problems. Light refreshments will be served, and, honestly, . it's sort of a fun evening to meet your City. , P.S. The Town Crier newsletter will also have a terrific display!!! CLERK-TYPIST Although the position may be filled by the time you receive this newspaper,' Arden Hills is looking for a full-time receptionist to work at the Village Hall. The part-time lady we had last winter was excellent, but it was discovered that 5 hours a day just wasn't enough, primarily because of the telephones. So if you.tve-interestw.ed;--in -full.-time work can- type, are -charming on the }Shane,>n'nd— would like to work at the Village Hall (center of all happenings), give our Clerk-Administrator Charlotte McNiesh a ring at 633-5676. POTPOURRI An exhibition by 8 faculty artists will be held at Bethel College through Sept. 28. Hours are 9 to 9 except Sundays in the Bethel gallery.....Groups of 12 or more may request use of any Mounds View School facility for educational orl recreational purposes by calling the Community Education Dept. at 636-363'50, ext- 144 ..... Flaherty's xt.144.....Flaherty's Arden Bowl held a terrific dedication party in August for thel completion of the new addition. They said they were sorry that there was no "Miss Arden Hills!' to cut the green (what else?) ribbon. I learned thatrthese are not bowling ALLEYS but bowling LANES..... AH is having trouble finding salt for our streets this winter. The sub- stitute available doesn't melt as well and is less white, but we will have to take what we can get ..... AH gained $1364 from the sale of the used equipment last month. Around 16 people submitted bids ..... If you are converting from oil 1 to gas heat this fall, you need a permit from the City..... Northwestern College has begun to build their new student residence center. Each two student unit will have a living area, sleep-study area, bathroom, and kitchen unit. CORRECTION from last month: Rice Creek Watershed does not pay AH $200/mont rent; it's $20O/YEAR1 We should be so lucky to get $200 every month for only two meetings..... The Planning Commission approved the preliminary plat for 10 acres of land in the industrial area southeast of 35 and 96. The idea is to break the land into 5 smaller plots and have sort of a mini-office park ..... Looks like good news on the empty gas station next to Flaherty's. Someone wants it for a real estate office..... Problem with the house built on the northwest corner of Hamlin and Colleens the driveway is 'way too close to the intersection, Steps are I rbeing taken to see that this won't occur again.....Looks as though Wesley will be the access road into Arden Oaks with a turn -around only at the end of Pascal.. 'The Lake Johanna Volunteer Fire Department will present a seminar during Fire Prevention Week on wood -burning stoves. That's the second week in October; watch for exact date and time.....There will be a program for newcomers to our area on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Arden Hills Library, 1941 W. Co. Rd. E-2 at 7 p.m....Road problem in Karth Lakes certain spots seem to be sinking, thus forming "birdbaths" after a rain. It was decided to wait until spring and see what happens over the winter before repairing..... The water assessment hearings for the Northwestern part of the Village, held in late August, must have become a little hairy, judging from the minutes. A group of homeowners along Highway 10 had convinced the Village earlier that they did not need water, so the lines are not designed to serve them at this time. They became distraught, however, to discover that they were still being charged an acreage assessment for the water, although they do not have to pay any front -footage assessments. Minutes from the Improvement Hearings of June 19, 19789 were read to show that this had all been discussed earlier..... ' STREET LIGHTS A street light resolution, which lists some of the general criteria to determine the placement of AH street lights, has been submitted to the Council for approval. Roughly, the resolution says that a street light will be consid- 'ered at an intersection if one road carries 500 cars/day and the other 2OOO/day. Also, a light will not be considered if its main purpose is crime prevention because statistics show that this is not a valid reason. Of course, a light will be considered anywhere that there is a special visual or safety problem, but the cost will not be borne by the City. E TIME OF AY �- Old Snelling to - — Bridge to — > Bridge Lexington As you can see, there is twice as much traffic through "downtown" as there is through the residential area. And it has increased substantially in the last two years. In 1977, approximately 7600 trips/day were counted in the business district; today it is roughly 12,000 trips/day. Another count will be made after all the schools, mainly Bethel, resume classes. Much of the traffic is apparently entering/exiting from the High- way 51 ramps; some sort of con- trol there seems imperative.
