HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-17-18 PTRC Minutes CITY OF ARDEN HILLS PARKS, TRAILS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING TUESDAY, APRIL 18, 2018 ARDEN HILLS CITY HALL CALL MEETING TO ORDER Chair Rich Straumann called the April 18, 2018, meeting of the Parks, Trails, and Recreation Committee to order at 6:31 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Rich Straumann, Committee Members Paul Beggin, Terry Finlay, Nancy O’Malley, Harold Peterson, and John Van Valkenburg OTHERS PRESENT: Staff Liaison Sara Knoll, Guests Tim Nelson and Dan Dietz ABSENT: City Council Liaison David Grant, Committee Members Josh Bloyer and Keri Bloyer 1. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Chair Rich Straumann requested to add item 4B – Joint Picnic with Beyond the Yellow Ribbon MOTION: The agenda was approved by the Committee unanimously as amended. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. February 20, 2018 MOTION: Minutes from the February 20, 2018 meeting were unanimously approved. 3. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Arden Hills Playground Replacement Schedule Staff Liaison Sara Knoll explained that after discussion with Public Works Director Sue Polka staff thinks it best to hold off on the play structure at Freeway Park until next year, after the trail project is complete. They are still planning to replace the playground at Cummings Park after the summer playground program is over this year. Committee Member Nancy O’Malley suggested that Arden Manor or Arden Oaks be done this year and Freeway Park in 2019. Parks, Trails & Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes April 17, 2018 Page 2 B. Johanna Marsh Playground Update Chair Straumann noted that the equipment was approved. There are benches and some that will be donated. Staff Liaison Knoll said the equipment will be greens, tans and browns to blend in with the area. Construction should start the week of May 19 and the park useable by the end of the summer. 4. NEW BUSINESS A. Fitness Court – National Fitness Campaign Staff Liaison Knoll stated that she was contacted by this fitness court company. There is only one in Minnesota now. They are interested in building the court at Cummings Park. The equipment is stationary and up to 40 people can use it at one time, and is made for all climates. She also felt it would be a good option for TCAAP, possibly in the civic area. Chair Straumann mentioned it might be a good fit at Lindey’s Park. Committee Member Nancy O’Malley said she thought it would fit best in TCAAP. Staff Liaison Knoll will continue to research price, structure sizes and competitive companies. B. Joint Picnic with Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Chair Rich Straumann noted that North Suburban Beyond the Yellow Ribbon helps with deployment and families while their National Guard members are deployed and also welcomes them back home. They will have a booth at an open house at AHATS on September 8 and it was suggested that there also be a booth from Arden Hills PTRC to talk about the City trails and amenities. He felt the committee could help with publicity for the event. They are hoping to have a potluck picnic on August 20 at Cummings Park as a “dress rehearsal” for the open house. 5. REPORTS Chair Straumann said work is starting on the trail on County Road F. The trail from Bethel University to County Road E2 will be done this summer, and the section of trail off of New Brighton Road will be done. There will be a traffic study done for the intersection by Lindey’s and that may involve a trail project in 2019. Chair Straumann said the cross country ski trail discussions are continuing. Discussion ensued regarding possible uses of the civic space at TCAAP. Chair Straumann mentioned that Scoops for Troops will be April 28 at AHATS. Staff Liaison Knoll reminded the committee that the May meeting will be at City Hall and the June 19 meeting will be the park and trail tour. The July meeting will be the annual potluck at Cummings Park. Parks, Trails & Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes April 17, 2018 Page 3 6. NEXT MEETING The next PTRC Committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 15, 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 7:38 p.m.
