PARKS, TRAILS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2019, 6:30 PM

CALL MEETING TO ORDER
Chair Rich Straumann called the November 19, 2019 meeting of the Parks, Trails, and Recreation
Committee to order at 6:30 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Rich Straumann, Committee Members Marie Hinton, Tim
Nelson, John Van Valkenburg, Terry Finlay, Dan Dietz, Jill Anderson, Paul Beggin
OTHERS PRESENT: City Administrator Dave Perrault, City Council Liaison David Grant, Staff
Liaison Sara Knoll
ABSENT: Committee Members Nancy O’Malley, Harold Petersen
1. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
MOTION: The agenda was unanimously approved by the Committee.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A. September 17, 2019 PTRC Minutes
MOTION: The minutes were approved by the Committee.

A. Donation Information
Chair Straumann noted the spreadsheet with donations received and the current balance.
Staff Liaison Knoll mentioned they have also received $2,500 from Boston Scientific and are
hoping for additional funds from them to complete the basketball system at Cummings Park.
Chair Straumann reviewed the spreadsheet.

Discussion ensued regarding potential placement and funding for the Michaelson Park Bench.
Staff Liaison Knoll said she will contact the family to see if they would like a park bench or if
they have other ideas for use of the funds.
Chair Straumann suggested that a list of park benches and where they are located would be nice
to have.
B. Trail Priorities
Chair Straumann reviewed the City and County trails and potential future projects.
Chair Straumann reviewed trail priorities: North to South 1) Lindey’s Park to South Snelling
Avenue, 2) Old Snelling Avenue Trail from E2 to Lake Valentine Road/Valentine Park, 3) Old
Snelling from Lake Valentine Road/Valentine Park to Highway 96. West to East 1) Parkshore
Drive from Snelling Avenue to Round Lake Road West, 2) Lake Valentine Road from Valentine
Park entrance to Mounds View High School.
Discussion ensued and items were re-prioritized: 1) Lindey’s Park to South Snelling Avenue, 2)
Old Snelling Avenue Trail from E2 to Lake Valentine Road/Valentine Park, 3) Parkshore Drive
from Snelling Avenue to Gateway Boulevard, 4) Lake Valentine Road from Valentine Park
entrance to Mounds View High School, 5) Old Snelling from Lake Valentine Road/Valentine Park
to Highway 96.
Also discussed were potential joint projects with Ramsey County: County Road E/Lake Johanna
Blvd. from Indian Place to entrance to Tony Schmidt Regional Park on North side, County Road
E/Lake Johanna Boulevard from entrance of Tony Schmidt Regional Park to Lindey’s Park on
North side of road, and the Elmer Anderson trail by Mounds View High School.

The next PTRC Committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 17, at Dunn Brother’s
Coffee, 6:30 p.m.
