Parks and Recreation Committee
Tuesday - March 18, 1969
Present- Boss , Cadwell , LaNasa, Lindbom, McIntosh, Spratt
Absent - Engle, Fish , Kuehn
Also Present - Council Liaison Bjorndahl
The Parks and Recreation Committee met on March 18th, at the home of
Jacqueline Spratt.
Colorado Blue Spruce and Norway Pine seedlings have been ordered and
will be available in May . Ken Boss will check on the pick up date.
The Arden Hills Junior Chamber of Commerce have volunteered to handle
the planting and care of the trees . Approval will be given if this
is cleared legally by Attorney Courtney .
At the April meeting the Committee will review Mr. Jacobson ' s report
on Village parks and will consider further the request made for play
equipment at the County Road E playground.
• The Jaycees would like to help prepare existing baseball diamonds for
Spring use . Mayor Bjorndahl expressed the hope of working with the
School District in this regard.
Notices concerning Oak Wilt were sent out October Ist and February 15th
in compliance with the Village ordinance . A total of 141 trees were
marked, 34 have not been removed to date. There were 474 diseased
trees last year.
The Minneapolis Sewer Department will be contacted for clean fill to
be used to improve Perry Park.
The next meeting will be at 8 :00 p .m. , April 15th , at the home of Herbert
McIntosh , 1975 Jerrold Avenue .

MINUTES OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE
January 14 , 1969

Skating rinks are now in fairly stable condition . Mounds View High
School warming house is up ; lights need only to be hooked up by NSP.
The Public Works Department now has five employees ; one salary is paid
from the Parks and Recreation budget. Parks and Recreation has a new
truck, a four-wheel -drive pickup with snowplow.
The Village now has full title to the Co Rd E lot adjacent to the
hockey rink. Parking for the area must be regulated to keep cars
off the highway .
Girl Scout Troup 21 wants to work this summer on some village beauti -
fication project at Perry Park.
Mr. Lagerstrom recently attended a meeting of the Mounds View School
District Recreational Advisory Committee. He reported to that organi -
zation the land purchases Arden Hills has made for parks , and showed
them the maps recently prepared by Mr. Peter Jacobson of the St. Paul
Parks Commission for their possible future development.
• He also told us about reports from other localities which are concerned
with recreation and associated needs. Some examples from these reports
are as follows :
North Oaks made a survey to get an idea of the opinions of the residents.
The nine activities most desired are , in order of preference ; Swimming,
free skating , tennis , sailing, outdoor pool , indoor pool , nature trail ,
baseball , teen activities . Of 1600 residents in North Oaks, there are
about 200 children ranging in age from pre-school to young adult.
New Brighton passed a bond issue for $ 1 . 2 million (spaced over 30 yrs . )
This amounts to about $ 15 . 00 per family per year. Other money will
be raised from a variety of sources to make up about $400,000 more.
Their parks were described , with existing facilities and projected
needs. The system includes 109 acres on the east side of Long Lake.
There are 75 acres of available school property, and proposed new parks
involve 175 acres.
Moundsview reported that they have eight park areas , seven of which
have been donated. Some are tax-delinquent land . All have playground
equipment. One is a civic area with Village Hall , picnic facilities , etc.
The February meeting will be 8: 00 p .m. Tuesday , the 18th at the home
of Ken Boss .
