Recreation Committee, and for publication in the Town Crier.

All the results are now in from our Parks Interest Survey, and the answers
you gave have been compiled and are being used by the Parks and Recreation
Committee for future planning. Some of your comments about maintenance will
be implemented immediatelv.
About 326 surveys were returned (15%), _which is a good return rate according
to those who do surveys professionally. We'd like to have heard from more.
of you. . .and if you have comments after reading the results of our survey,
we'd still like to hear from you.
Overall, most of you who replied were pleased with your parks and with the
care they receive. We were especially surprised and pleased with the positive
response we received to the development being done in Crepeau Nature Preserve,
and to trail development. You wanted more trails, better-maintained trails,
and better-marked trails. The Parks maintenance crews, within the limitations
of manpower and funds available, will be adding more identification to the
trails and maintaining them more regularly. They will be upgraded as funds
are available, but we'll probably give them a higher priority as a result of
this survey.
• One thing we learned from the survey was that many of you aren't sure where
all the parks are located, or where all of the trails are located. We're pre-
par gig a description of each park, and a map showing all of the parks and trails,
for distribution to each resident.

• Floral Park, Crepeau and Cummings following closely. Valentine Park came
next in numbers of respondents calling it their home park, Ingerson, Freeway
and Arden Oaks following closely.
The surveys indicated many of you interested in more pre-school equipment
at your park, and adding that will become a high priority item in our 1986
planning.
You seemed to greatly appreciate the tennis courts added in the last two years
and asked for more. A few of you would like some of them lighted. The Parks
Committee will consider these comments in its 1986 planning also.
Dogs in the parks, and dog droppings in the parks, continue to be a problem'

responsibility to remove any feces deposited by his dog, and dogs must be
under the control of their owners at all times.
We did have some negative comments. Some of you felt Perry Park too heavily
used, with four league-sized ballfields. We think it's too heavily used too,
and are continuously searching for additional locations for league-sized soft-
ball fields. As soon as we can possibly do so, we' ll find alternate locations
for some of the teams using those fields.
We received several comments suggesting we have a broader range of programs.
The philosophical guidelines used in developing programs and activities have
been:

The beach at Lake Johanna, and Tony Schmidt Park, are not a part of the Arden
Hills' parks system. They are owned and maintained by Ramsey County.
Some of the comments we received about park maintenance in general concerned
controlling poison ivy and pesky bugs. We will try to control the poison
ivy in the major park areas, but we can't do too much about the mosquitoes
you mentioned. We're part of the Metropolitan Mosquito Control Commission,
and they take care of mosquito control.
32% of those of you replying to the survey were under 20, 10% between 20 and
30 years of age, 42% in the 30 to 50 year age group, and 16% over 50.
167 of you had lived in Arden Hills less than two years , 227 from 2 to 5 vears,
36% from 6 to 15 years, and 26% over 15 years. 13% of those of you respond-
ing said you didn't use the parks; 87% stated that they did. They seem to
be used pretty equally in each season of the year, 35% in summer, 257 in the
fall, 177 in the winter, and 237 use them in the spring of the year.
Most of _you (597) were satisfied with the appearance of your park most of the
time, 30% are satisfied with the appearance of your park all of the time, 10%
are pleased only some of the time, and the inevitable 17 -- never.
78% of you are satisfied with the level of development of the park you use,
22% were not satisfied, some feeling it was over-developed, probably an equal
number feeling it underdeveloped.
Responses on questions as to program usage were more mixed, with 52% of you
having used an Arden Hills' sponsored recreation program, and 48% of you
not having participated. Of those who have participated, 32% rated the programs
excellent, 597 rated them good, 87 fair and -- here's our 17 again -- 17 poor.
