HomeMy WebLinkAboutPolice Week Proclamation CITY OF ARDEN HILLS COUNTY OF RAMSEY STATE OF MINNESOTA PROCLAMATION To recognize National Police Week 2025 and to honor the service and sacrifice of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty while protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy WHEREAS, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week; and WHEREAS, National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of the United States Congress in 1962; and WHEREAS, There are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office; and WHEREAS, Everyday law enforcement officers are the first to be on the scene to help those in need and are dedicated to serving the community; and WHEREAS, National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others; and WHEREAS, Over 56,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, resulting in approximately 17,000 injuries, and assaults against officers in Minnesota have increased by over 160% in the last decade; and WHEREAS, Since the first recorded death in 1786, approximately 27,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have died in the line of duty, including members of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office; and WHEREAS, The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, In 2024, 165 officers died nationwide in the line of duty and their names will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring; and WHEREAS, The service and sacrifice of all officers who died in the line of duty will be honored during the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s Candlelight Vigil on May 13, 2025; and WHEREAS, On May 15, 2025, the service and sacrifice of all officers who died in the line of duty will be honored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association; and WHEREAS, The service and sacrifice of Ramsey County suburban law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty will be honored during the Ramsey County Suburban Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony on May 15th, 2025. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, the City of Arden Hills City Council designates May 11-17, 2025 as Police Week in Arden Hills, Minnesota, and publicly salutes the service of law enforcement officers in our community and in communities across the nation. __________________________ ___________________________ David Grant, Mayor Brenda Holden, Councilmember ___________________________ ___________________________ Emily Rousseau, Councilmember Tena Monson, Councilmember ___________________________ Kurt Weber, Councilmember
