Resolution No. 85-16
REQUESTING CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT TO
CONTINUE THEIR EFFORTS TO' HALT THE PERSE-
CUTION OF THE BAHA'I MINORITY IN IRAN
WHEREAS, the Baha'I community In Iran Is experienc-
Ing persecution, harassment and disappearance of family mem-
bers, job discrimination, seizure of bank funds, destruction
of personal property and torture; and
.
WHEREAS, current reports show that over one hundred
seventy Baha'Is and Baha'I religious leaders heve been exe-
cuted by the government of Iran; end
WHEREAS, the continued harassment and murder of
Baha'Is demonstrates thet the government of Iran has leunched
a conscious effort to destroy the Baha'I community; and
WHEREAS, the persecution of the Baha'Is In Iran
directly affects Immediate femlly members of three Arden HI lis
families; and
WHEREAS, both the United States government and the
United Nations Human Rights Commission have protested the
persistent violations of human rights directed against the
Baha'I community by the IranIan authorities; and
WHEREAS, despite the above-mentioned resolutions,
the government of Iran has outlawed the administrative Insti-
tutions of the Beha'l Faith In Iran end continues to sevently
persecute Its adherents;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City
Councl I of Arden HI lis, Mlnnesote that It condemns the perse-
cution of the Baha'Is end urges the Congress and the President
of the United States to continue their efforts to halt the
persecution of the Baha'I community In Iran.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk Admlnlstretor
of the City of Arden HI lis, Minnesota Is directed to transmit
certified copies of this resolution to the President of the
United States, the President and Secretery of the United Stetes
Senate, the Speeker end the Chief Clerk of the United States
House of Representatives end to Mlnnesote's Senetors and
Representetlves In Congress.
