SUBJECT: Bocce Golf Proposal Discussion
BACKGROUND
The Strategies for Parks, Trails, and Community Building were approved by the City Council in
April of 2006. The first strategy listed under Parks is the possibility of a Disk Golf Course
and/or Bocce Golf Course. The Parks Trails and Recreation Committee (pTRC) is considering
both types of golf courses and has been researching cost and location since that time. Mr. Lanny
Baumann, a PTRC Committee Member brought forward a proposal for a Nine Hole Bocce Golf
Course at Lindey's Park. The PTRC Committee is in favor of installing a course at Lindey's
Park. At their Apri117, 2007 PTRC meeting, the Committee made a motion to recommend
allocating $2,500.00 to put in a bocce golf course at Lindey's Park this year (2007). The motion
carried unanimously. In the 2002 Parks, Trails and Open Space Plan, Lindey's Park is listed as
unprogrammed open space. By recommending that Bocce Golfbe installed for Lindey's Park,
the PTRC is now interested in changing that park to a programmed open space.
A nine hole Bocce Golf Course proposal and diagram are included for your review. PTRC
Committee Member Baumann will be present to answer any questions regarding Bocce Golf.
Listed below are some points the PTRC would like to highlight from the proposal for the City
Council:
1. Maintenance is very minimal. The course would not require any special grass mowing
other than the normal weekly cutting. During the winter season, a cap can be placed over
the holes.
2. An annual name use fee of$lOO is listed to begin after the fIrst year. Staff did voice
concerns about this to Mr. Baumann and the PTRC and did check with the City Attorney
to get his comments. His only recommendation was for the City to write up an official
agreement between Mr. Baumann and the City and have a clause that states the City can
terminate the agreement at any time. If the City Council has concerns about the annual
naming fee, Mr. Baumann has stated that he is williug to discuss possible alternatives to
this.

3. Staff and the PTRC did voice concerns about the golf course causing conflict with other
park users. Bethel University students often utilize Lindey's Park for rugby, lacrosse, or
football. The students utilize this grassy area without a permit from the City. Mr.
Baumann designed the course in order to utilize the perimeter ofthe park, therefore,
minimizing the conflict with other random uses of the park.
BUDGET
Staff did not budget for a Bocce Golf Course in 2007. However, the PTRC is very interested in
installing the golf course this year. A few projects that were slated to come from the Park Fund
in 2006 and 2007, have been delayed. Therefore, the PTRC is asking that the $2,500 come from
the Special Revenue, Park Fund in 2007.
RECOMMENDATION
The PTRC would like to move forward on installing a Bocce Golf Course at Lindey's Park.
Staff is looking for City Council iuput on the concept and consensus on whether to proceed in
2007.

Please consider construction of a Bocce Golf TM course at Lindy's Park.
What is Bocce Golf?
It is an outdoor skill game that I invented where a Bocce ball is rolled around
a course from tee to green in an attempt to get the ball in the holes with the
fewest rolls. It is similar to golf but much easier to play because there are
no clubs to purchase or select from when taking your turn.
How does one olav Bocce Golf? (Using Lindy's Park as an example)
Bring your own Bocce ball to Lindy's Park. Park in the lot at the top of the
hill where the first hole starts and the last hole ends. The first three holes are
on the County Road E side of the triangle, the next three on the Old Snelling
side, and the final three utilize the hillside along the road to the parking lot.
All nine holes are on the perimeter of the park along the tree line, just inside
the fence. Like golf, score cards are used to keep track of scores with par
designations for each hole from par 2 to par 4 with hole lengths from 15 to
35 yards for this design.
How much would the course cost to build and what would be included?
The course at Lindy's Park would be a very basic and cheap design with no
added shrubs, sand traps, or water hazards for aproximately $200.00 1 hole.
This proposal design is for nine hoies but there is enough room for three
more holes if wanted.
This special price just for Arden Hills includes:
-- course layout 1 design
-- 9 or 12 hole score card on spreadsheet format
-- stone tee marker with hole number, yard length, and drawing of hole
-- contouring of greens area around holes to provide consistent roll
-- PVC hole liner, cap, and 16" red flag hole marker

This basic course design should not require any special grass mowing other
than the normal weekly cutting, however, the grass at Lindy's Park is very
sparce and inconsistent, and might need some top dressing and seeding for
better Bocce Golf fairways.
If there is significant interest in Bocce Golf, the entire park could be upgraded
to a full 18 holes with a more advanced course design which would have a more
refined and manicured appearance that would be much more fun to play.
