MEMORANDUM DATE: January 11, 2010 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members Sue Iverson, Acting City Administrator FROM: Michelle Olson, Parks and Recreation Manager SUBJECT: Recognition for Year's of Service and Employee of the Year Background The City Council of Arden Hills encourages and supports recognizing employees who make significant contributions to the City. At its September 1994 meeting, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 94-47, establishing an Employee Recognition Committee (ERC). The ERC then recommended a list of programs to recognize employees for: years of service, exceptional performance and retirement. In June of 2005, the Employee Recognition Policy was established. The 2009 EMC was made up of the following employees: Michelle Olson, Greg Hoag, Sherri Eisenbraun, Rebecca Brazys, Sonja Klingberg and James Lehnhoff. Employee of the Year The purpose of selecting an Employee of the Year is to reward employees who are adjudged by their co-workers to be deserving of special recognition for their accomplishments and contributions to the City. The ERC met and followed the procedure below to determine the City of Arden Hills 2009 Employee of the Year: • Each employee was given the opportunity to nominate a City employee (or oneself) for Employee of the Year. • The following categories represented areas which are used to determine an Employee of the Year. Each nomination must relate to either one of the categories, and shall include a description detailing the reason for the nomination. 1. Exceptional Performance - Consistent high-level of dependability, reliability, responsibility and integrity over a period of employment with the city are items measured in this category. Recognition is given to high quality ongoing consistent dedication to the City. This category also recognizes individual(s) who consistently project a positive image of the City and its services to his/her co-workers and the general public. Significant Accomplishment- Often an employee is charged with the responsibility or assumes the responsibility of completing a significant goal, activity, or project. Frequently - the completion of such a project has a major impact on the operations of the department or the City as a whole. This category recognizes employees for such accomplishments. The ERC announced the Employee of the Year at an all employee luncheon on Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The 2009 Employee of the Year is Pete Saxe from Public Works. The following are a few of the comments included on the nominations for Pete: 0 Pete has shown every day to have a high level of dependability, reliability, responsibility and integrity. • He never complains about the jobs he is given and always has a smile on his face. 0 As a Public Works employee, he shows a positive image to the general public. • "I have the highest regard for the job that Pete does and he is very deserving of this recognition." • Pete accepted the challenge and provided excellent, proactive maintenance to our parks this past summer when he was asked to coordinate the summer mowing crew and supervise seasonal staff. • Pete has consistently demonstrated a high level of dependability, and has provided exemplary service to the City. • In 2009, Pete not only continued his high quality performance, but also took on the leadership of the seasonal park maintenance staff. Under his leadership, the operation of the seasonal maintenance crew was changed from a focus on park mowing to a focus on comprehensive maintenance of each park at the time of each mowing. This significantly improved the level of park maintenance and park facilities. Pete's focus on quality results and his leadership ability ensured the new operational method was successful. Recognition for Year's of Service. The Employee Recognition Committee recognized three individuals for Year's of Service. The policy states that employees shall be recognized for every five (5) years of employment with the City. Employees shall receive a certificate from the City recognizing them for their years of service. The following employees were awarded certificates on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at a staff gathering: • Pete Saxe—Public Works—20 years • Pam Sweeney—Administration— 10 years • Michelle Olson—Public Works/Parks and Recreation— 10 years \\Metro-inet.us\ardenhills\PR&P MParks\Memos\Council Memos\011110 Employee of the year- Recognition.doc 3 Requested Council Action Pete Saxe will be present at tonight's meeting to receive his Employee of the year award from the Acting City Administrator and the Mayor.
