SUBJECT: Engineering workspace
Backiround
Arden Hills has recently requested the City of Roseville to provide additional engineering
services in order to assist the City in doing more capital projects. This request was
acceptable to Roseville and this request required an amendment(done administratively)
to our joint powers agreement. Roseville will be interviewing candidates for this new
position on July 16 and 19, 2010.
Discussion
Per the agreement with Roseville, the City is responsible for providing the workspace and
the necessary technology and other office related items at Arden Hills City Hall. In this
regard, the City needs to decide where this person should be located and what type of
work space should be provided.
There are a few options that the City can consider to address this situation. They include:
1. ordering and installing another cubical upstairs where 2 cubes currently exist(as
well as an open table work space for one of our interns);
2. pursuing one of the previously discussed plans for the construction of about 4
offices upstairs and then consider moving the Public Works department to this
location(see attached sketches from 2007-08);
3. moving the 2 interns that work in the cubical next to the Deputy Clerk's office to
some open table work space upstairs and then have the new Engineer work out of
this existing cube; or
4. any other option the Council wants to suggest.
Factors to consider in picking the best work space option for the City include operational
efficiencies; the long term engineering plans of the City; how we would reuse a cube if
this option was selected and, at a later date, offices were constructed upstairs; and the
cost of various options.
