THE ANCHOR
The permanent anchor should be heavy enough to prevent drag during foul weather or strong currents. Consult with the Harbor Master
or other local authority in your area to determine the correct configuration of your ground tackle.
THE ANCHOR CHAIN
The anchor chain should be strong enough to hold the moored boat to the moving anchor, but not so heavy as to create a problem of
having to use an oversized mooring buoy,
Length of the chain is important due to the variation of weather, tide and the direction of the windand curren 1, The boat will drift to the
maximum distance allowed by the chain and pennant for a radius of 360 degrees around the anchr. ri.atC should be taken that there are
no underwater obstructions or boats within the circular turning area of your boat and mooring. Remember when positioning your
mooring to allow a safety margin for possible anchor drag and other local conditions.
Chapman's Piloting Seamanship and Small Boat Handling recommends the following as a guide to determining chain length
LOCATIO LENGTH OF ANCHOR CHAIN
Inland Lake 1 -1/4 times normal water depth
Inland River 2 times normal water depth
Tidal Water 2 -1/4 times normal water depth
In many instances, this amount of "extra" chain leads to interference with other nearby moorings. Common sense must be applied when
considering the amount of clearance that you allow for your boat on its mooring.
FINALLY
Each mooring location has a unique set of problems that must be addressed. Ask your local Harbormaster, Coast Guard station or
marina for information on the variations in conditions that you can expect. Remember to include a margin of safety in the final sizing and
selection of your mooring system.
MOORING SYSTEM DIAGRAM
Sur Moor"'
Sur Moo* Hard Skin Buoy
T3C Mooring Buoy
Mooring Pennant
(Anechet to boat Galvanized shack
a
Mooring Shackle)
DIAGRAM
Light Chain — (Not shown to scale)
Light Chain
Galvanized shackles
l Mushroom Anchor
/ or block
Shackle & Swivel
I
Foam Filled Buoy Warranty: Floatation for 3 Years
CAUTION: FOAM FILLED BUOYS CAN BE DAMAGED FROM ICE.
