: t ,,, -
TO: Parks & Recreation Committee
FROM: Kim Stephan
DATE: January 25, 2011
SUBJECT: Music in the Parks
Mr. Tom Lee has said he would find and organize the Teen Bands again if that is what the committee would
like, as well as perform one night himself either solo acoustical or with his band.
Ms. Stephan sent the section of the minutes from the January meeting regarding the Music in the Parks
Program to Ms. LaValie looking for input as to children's bands, country music bands, bad weather policy
and availability of the bands she is involved with. Ms. LaValle supplied information on all the above which
Ms. Stephan passed on to the committee via email.
Ms. LaVa11e's preference: I would bring back the BBB Combo and the 7 Cats if we can work out dates, and
maybe get the BBB Jazz Orchestra for the last night, if they are available and we can pay $400. If they are I,
not, I would bring in the Riverside Swing Band. They are most likely very similar to the BBBJazzO, but I ',
would say (unfairly of course) that the BBB Jazz Orchestra is the best of the two, most fun to listen too, and
yes...local. The two smaller bands BBB Combo and the 7 Cats play similar music, but the Cats have 4
horns instead of 2, and the vocalist is awesome. If you think they are too similar, (both playing jazz and I,
swing tunes) I would see which of the two know they are available.
I do have a 3 piece folk band (guitars and harmonica with vocals) Mean Gene and the Woodticks, who
would love to fill a night, that would give you a nice variety. Not country, but folk songs that everyone
knows, light or easy Rock type. I can check around for a children's band, it is possible the 7 Cats pianist,
Ivory Cat, knows someone.
So I would try:
• Combo (if not available... try the Dixieland band) (earlier July date)
• 7 Cats (later...August date) We often have the kids in the audience come join us on shakers and
tambourines. Had a great tirne during our Chrishnas show with the kids.. Our vocalist loves
working with the kids.
• BBB Jazz Orchestra (if not available... get Riverside) late August, and if not Riverside, I could
most likely get the White Bear Big Band
• Mean Gene and the Woodticks
• Teen Band
• Tom Lee
About rainouts, parks handle this two ways. Some pay regardless, so expect you to show up, and then if it is
a rainout, you get paid, and leave. The other way is to say if the concert gets cancelled 4 hours before
