City of Center�-illc Planning and Zoning Commission January 4, 2011 Ms. Johnson ��as present to advocate for a change in the city code to pernlit the keeping of bees in the city. She shared ordinance requirements from the City of Minneapolis where beekeeping is peimitted subject to certain restrictions, which include lot size, setbacks for locations of hives, restrictions on number of hives permitted, and requiring approval by adjoining neighbors. Commissioners were generally supportive if a change, but directed staff to prepare a summary and that it be presented to the City Council for feedback before proceeding. The City Code changes if approved by Council would include the following: 1. Minimum one-half acre lot size 2. No more than two bee colonies shall be allowed. 3. Hives shall be setback from property lines a minimum of 25 feet. 4. Applicants shall have a minimum of 16 hours of training on keeping bees. 5. Permission must be obtained from owners of all property abutting the proposed site. 6. A permit must be obtained from the City. 7. Honey bees will be added to the code as farnl animals which are allowed in R-1 properties of ten acres or more, however no permit would be required. Consensus was that if the Citv Council is supportive, the details of a proposed ordinance will be developed at the next meetin� and submitted to Council for approval. V. DISCUSSIQN �'I'E1��S None VI.
