Memorandum
To: RY -CHEL GAUST
CC: FILE
From: CHIEF VANBURKL
Date: 09/25/97
Re: ANOKA COUNTY SENIOR HOUSING PROJECT
Dear Ry -Chel;
Thank you for the opportunity to review the Anoka County Senior Housing plans.
Following a review of the blue prints, I am providing you with several observations and /or
concerns. Some of these may already be addressed and I just missed them in my review-
1 would strongly suggest that Centerville Road be modified in such a manner to provide a
right turn lane into the project for northbound traffic, and a passing lane for southbound
traffic. Vehicles stopping in the roadw y present a hazard of rear end collision to those
attempting to turn into the housing project. This would be an Anoka County responsibility.
Having dealt with senior housing in the past, it has been my experience that folks tend to fall
when walking up sidewalks to enter the facility. I did not see a handrail provision for either the
main entrance or the garage entrance. Both areas would likely become slippery during inclimate
weather. I sincerely hope that consideration is given in this area.
1 noticed that the plan calls for exterior lighting to be mounted on the building exterior. I did not
see lighting locations depicted in the plans and would want to review placement to ensure
adequate lighting. I also did not see a provision for lighting in the front parking lot or the
enclosed garage area. Both areas should be illuminated for safety.
In reviewing the living space, the plan seems to call for interior doors having a maximum width
of 2' 6 ". 1 may have misread this but it caused me concern with reference to taking an ambulance
stretcher down a narrow interior hallway and attempting to reach a resident within a bedroom.
Exterior sliding patio doors are nice but are not conducive to security. I would recommend that
sliding patio doors be afforded appropriate securing devices, locks, track bars, pins or similar.
• Can I assume that each living space will have a panic alarm for medical emergencies?
• 1 am also assuming that entrance to the facility will be restricted through appropriate security
devices, i.e. intercom and electronic entry, etc.
t
