NELSON FENCE VARIANCE
PUBLIC HEARING -- Nelson Fence Variance Request - July 9,1996
Mari and Roger Nelson, 1846 - 73rd Street, explained that the variance is for a 6 foot
fence around their backyard. Because their lot is on a comer it is considered a side lot
they would only be allowed to put up a 4 foot fence.
The application for the variance request completed by the Nelsons explains the reasons for
a 6 foot privacy fence.
No residents present regarding this issue.
MOTION by Drilling, second by Welk to adjourn the public hearing for the Nelson Fence
variance request. Motion carried unanimously.
Nelson Fence Variance Recommendation - July 9, 1996
Welk stated the view for traffic on the street doesn't seem to be hindered by a fence.
Mr. Nyberg suggested landscaping instead of a fence.
TourvHle stated a solid wood fence is for privacy and from the street side it looks like a
stockyard.
Drilling doesn't see a reason to grant a variance. LaMotte agreed with Drilling.
Tourville questioned the need for a 6 foot, whether a 4 foot fence wouldn't be sufficient.
He also added that comer lots do present a problem.
MOTION by LaMotte, second by Drilling to table for further research. Staff is requested
to survey surrounding communities to see how they address fences on corner lots. Motion
carried unanimously.
Nelson Fence Variance -August 6, 1996
P &Z decided that the main concern would be for visibility and that it doesn't appear to
hinder visibility for traffic on 73rd.
MOTION by Welk, second by Drilling to grant a variance allowing a 6 foot fence - as
proposed - for a comer lot at 1846 - 73rd Street, as long as the set backs are met, it
doesn't obstruct vision for traffic in the area and that the neighbors are also in favor of
granting the variance. Motion carried unanimously.
