AIl in favor. Motion carried <br />unanimousIv. <br /> <br />VB. PUBLIC HEARINGS <br /> <br />Mayor Sweeney opened all the public hearings at 6:43 p.m. <br /> <br />1. Ordinance #5 Firearms <br /> <br />Mayor Sweeney indicated he had been asked by residents to ask Council to consider <br />lifting the ban on BB guns so that people would be allowed to shoot at squirrels or other <br />varmints in their yards. <br /> <br />Motion bv CouneD Member Broussard Vickers. seconded bv CouneD Member Paar <br />to dose the oublie hearin2. Motion carried unanimouslv. <br /> <br />Mayor Sweeney closed the public hearing at 7:08 p.rn.. <br /> <br />Council Member Broussard Vickers indicated that the primary reason for review of this <br />ordinance was to allow the police to destroy unclaimed firearms. She then said that <br />changing the ordinance to allow BB guns would require another public hearing because it <br />is a substantial change to the ordinance. She further commented that she is not in favor <br />of making that change because someone may be aiming at a squirrel and shoot someone <br />else by mistake. <br /> <br />Council Member Capra indicated she is opposed to the change. <br /> <br />Mayor Sweeney indicated he did not see an issue with BB guns and he leans toward the <br />side of personal responsibility. He further commented that he lived in a small town on a <br />small lot and they were allowed to use BB guns and there were no issues. <br /> <br />Council Member Lee commented that guns are a part of this country's national heritage <br />and anything that restricts the freedom of that is not constitutional. He then said that he <br />does not see the need to revisit the ordinance whether or not he agrees with the use ofBB <br />guns. <br /> <br />Page 3 of8 <br />
