Centennial Fire District
7741 Lake Drive
Lino Lakes, MN 55014
(651) 784-7472

. _1.

Date:

May 8, 2003

Staff Originator:

Milo Bennett, Fire Chief

Subject:

Optional Chapter 1306 of Building Code

Chapter 1306 establishes additional requirements for fire sprinkler systems. It sets
lower square footage thresholds when a fire sprinkler system is required than the
regular building code. The city of Centerville has had Chapter 1306 in place for
sometime but it needs to be readopted with the new building code.

There are two options within 1306 that I would strongly encourage to be adopted.
The first one requires an existing structure to be sprinkled when an addition is
made to a building and the size of the building requires a sprinkler system. This
option has been effect in Centerville for some time with the previous code. The
second option that I encourage would require any multiple housing structures with
8500 or more square feet to be sprinkled.

On many occasions fire sprinkler systems have proven to control frres and
drastically reduce the damage caused by fire. A fire in a multiple housing unit
usually displaces more than one family for some period of time.

Again, I encourage the adoption of Chapter 1306 with the two options outlined
above. The cities of Lino Lakes and Circle Pines will be adopting the same
requirements.

The cities of Blaine, Spring Lake Park, Mound, Stillwater, Coon Rapids, Shakopee
and Bloomington have also adopted the same options as of April 11, 2003.
