m.HOW IS METHAMPHETAMINE MADE?

\

A. Ingredients
There are many different ingredients and. chemical substances that can be used to
make meth. Ingredients used usually include various solvents, corrosives,
irritants, acids, basest metals and salts. These ingredients are often obtained from
common household products includins (amoDB many other ingredients) cold
tablets, painl thinner, campins fuelt iodine, table sa1t.lithium from batteries, red
phosphonlS ftoDl matches, ether, lye, sulfuric acid, and veterinarian products.:3
Accordin, to tllo Minnesota Department of Health, "[m]eth 'recipes' are easy to
obtain ttom other cooks and from the Internet.'''; Both the meth ~n
process and the-mixtures produced can be extremely dangerous. Meth
production can result in explosions. chemical fires and the release of toxic sasses.
toxic waste material is prodUced..Jtc; "'The vapor is the vehicle . · . by which
methamphetamine residue can travel and accumulate on indoor sudaces (walls,'
flootS, ceilinas, tUmiture, etc.)'"

C, Waste ·
Even when moth labs are seized before they explode or catch fire, the site often
remains dangerous to human health. ~'After a lab has been abandoned or shut
down by law enforcement, the property is usually found to be contanliDated with
hazardous chemicalS.". As discussed above. the noxious vapors created. during
meth production deposit meth residue on indoor surfaces and can contaminate the
entire site. In addition, .'[a] minimum of S to 7 pounds of chemical waste are
produced for each pound of meth ~ufactured. ,,9
