tery -t fe <br /> 1880 Main Street, CenterviCCe, 91ff55038 <br /> E5tafisha 18-57 6S1- 429 -3232 or Fa-X651-429-8629 <br /> January 8, 2013 <br /> Memo to Planning and Zoning Commission <br /> Re: Keeping of Chickens <br /> I have looked into the question of whether the city should consider allowing chickens to <br /> be kept in the city. <br /> I found that our neighboring communities of Hugo, Lino Lakes, Circle Pines and <br /> Lexington are similar to Centerville, in that they only allow farm animals in agricultural <br /> areas, typically on parcels of ten acres or more. <br /> I found a few communities that allow chickens to be kept in the city in small lot <br /> residential neighborhoods, but it is not a common practice. <br /> While hens do not make noise to the manner of roosters, they do make noises. One of the <br /> common concerns amongst the cities is that the feed materials will attract rodents and <br /> other vermin. <br /> Centerville is part of the Centennial Lakes Police Department service area along with <br /> Lexington and Circle Pines. The three cities have committed to coordinating their <br /> respective code of regulations for ease of enforcement. Animal regulations are identical <br /> in the three cities. <br /> I would recommend that we not make any changes in our regulations on keeping of <br /> animals until we visit with Circle Pines and Lexington. If they are not interested in <br /> allowing chickens, then I would suggest that we not make any changes. <br /> Dallas Larson, City Administrator <br />
