te V iffe 1880 Wan Street, Centen4i2e, MX55038
Estafi iAf.!! l&5 651 -429 -3232 or (Fax 651 -429 -8629
January 8, 2013
Memo to Planning and Zoning Commission
Re: Keeping of Chickens
I have looked into the question of whether the city should consider allowing chickens to
be kept in the city.
I found that our neighboring communities of Hugo, Lino Lakes, Circle Pines and
Lexington are similar to Centerville, in that they only allow farm animals in agricultural
areas, typically on parcels of ten acres or more.
I found a few communities that allow chickens to be kept in the city in small lot
residential neighborhoods, but it is not a common practice.
While hens do not make noise to the manner of roosters, they do make noises. One of the
common concerns amongst the cities is that the feed materials will attract rodents and
other vermin.
Centerville is part of the Centennial Lakes Police Department service area along with
Lexington and Circle Pines. The three cities have committed to coordinating their
respective code of regulations for ease of enforcement. Animal regulations are identical
in the three cities.
I would recommend that we not make any changes in our regulations on keeping of
animals until we visit with Circle Pines and Lexington. If they are not interested in
allowing chickens, then I would suggest that we not make any changes.
Dallas Larson, City Administrator
