X
Cuba used to have an industrialized agricultural system, exporting sugar and citrus to
Russia and importing most of its food, as well as oil, machinery, fertilizers and pesticides.
But after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the U.S. trade embargo, Cuba was cut off
from its export-import system.
And then a beautiful thing happened. Urban gardens sprouted around the island's cities,
encouraged by the government. Today, Cuba is a prime example of how to create an
organic, sustainable food and farming system.
The stories of Cuba's sustainable farms are the subject of a documentary titled: Teirralismo:
Stories from a Cooperative Farm.
On Tuesday,March 31,you can watch the film at Augsburg College. It will be shown
at 7 p.m. in the Science Building, #123, at the corner of 21st Ave. and 7th Street, 1st
floor. Following the film, which will be in Spanish with subtitles, there will be a panel
discussion with local organic farmers, including two who recently traveled to Cuba to
study the country's organic agriculture.
More here
Watch the trailer
LITTLE BYTES
Essential Reading for the Week
9
36
