4/6/2015 Lala level,water supplysolutions premature-Your local online newspaper:Colurms
Second, this is a piecemeal and relatively arbitrary approach to solving any problem with groundwater.
The aquifers that serve the metropolitan area do not follow municipal boundaries. There are cities that
impact the same aquifers but are not included in the GWMA.
Lastly, there are several other solutions that have not been fully considered; options that may be less
expensive and more effective.
This year local legislators working with local elected officials, city managers and engineers have
come up with two proposals.
First, we have submitted legislation requesting funds for feasibility and design of a regional
wastewater system. This approach will keep water in our region, which will help recharge the aquifer
and can provide water for lake augmentation if necessary.
The second proposal would change how we manage our water supply across the entire metropolitan
area. It would realign the current system creating a more effective and accountable process for water
supply management. This legislation would also temporarily suspend implementation of GWMA fees
and charges and creation of a surface water supply plan.
This is a complicated issue with a lot of moving parts. Because of perseverance and the coordinated
efforts among numerous organizations and individuals we are much closer to a solution. We remain
committed to finding a smart and permanent solution to the lake level as well as proper management
,f our water supply system.
— Sen.
