Check Out The HIM-Sled Sade <br /> Sliding Hill Attributes and Design Criteria <br /> The most important criterion for a sliding hill is a safe but challenging sliding <br /> opportunity,with slopes of different heights and steepness to meet the varied skill <br /> levels of the people who participate in sledding. <br /> Requiremerits: <br /> 1) A sliding hill must have sufficient height and slope to provide <br /> a challenge to the sledders,but also provide a safe run-out <br /> area. <br /> 2) The hill must be smooth,i.e.,no lumps,jumps,walls or any <br /> hazards or changes in topography that could cause a sliding <br /> device to become airborne or go out of control. There must be <br /> smooth transition slopes at the top and,most importantly,at <br /> the bottom of the hill,so that there are no imperfections to <br /> cause a moving sled to go out of control at the point where it <br /> reaches its ma)dmum speed. <br /> 3) The hill and run-out must not have any fixed collidable haz- <br /> ards-trees,rocks,walls,sign posts,picnic tables,garbage <br /> containers,etc. <br /> 4) The sled run lane must be six to seven metres wide down the <br /> length of the slope. If this dimension is not possible,then <br /> pack a sliding line into the face of the hill,using a snow <br /> machine(ski-doo)early in the snow season to create a wide <br /> track(gully)that will guide sledders to the bottom of the hill <br /> safely. . <br /> 5) The hill must be oriented so as to prolong snow cover and <br /> reduce icing. Hills that are south facing lose their snow very <br /> quickly and are subject to icy conditions because of daytime <br /> melting. <br /> 6) A sliding hill must not face into prevailing winter winds. <br /> Wind can limit sledders'comfort,contributes to frostbite,and <br /> blows snow off of the hill. <br /> 7) There must be a level area at the top of the hill to allow for <br /> safe gathering and seating prior to takeoff. Many hills have <br /> sloped take-off areas,where the sliding device starts moving <br /> before it is properly loaded. This area is crucial to safety <br /> because it takes time to properly tuck in legs,feet and hands <br /> before shoving off. If it is a very popular hill or sliding lane, <br /> the take-off area should also allow room for at least one other <br /> party at the top of the sliding lane. <br /> Appendix D-Sliding Hill Attributes and Design Criteria Page 37 <br />
