r'
Why Centennial Fire District needs an Aerial
1. Buildings over 2 stories
An aerial device is recommended when a number of buildings within the jurisdiction appear to be
beyond the reach of existing fire department ground ladders. This recommendation is not only based
on ISO recommendations but is a basic common-sense concept. If a significant number of your
buildings are beyond the reach of your ground ladders, you had better do something about it.
2. ISO
I found the citation under Section 540 of the Insurance Services Office (ISO) Fire Suppression Rating
Schedule. It specifically states, "[R]esponse areas with 5 buildings that are 3 stories or 35 feet or more
in height, or [have] 5 buildings that have a Needed Fire Flow greater than 3,500 gpm, or any
combination of these criteria, should have a ladder company."
3. The price of this truck is $150k vs a new aerial at $1m
a. Its listed for $175k
b. 1 year warranty no maintenance
c. 20% down, 3 years 0% interest
4. Fire Sprinklers are located, high on a ceiling to spray down on a fire cooling the heated
air, in a defensive fire you want to spray down on the fire since it will vent through the
roof. Defensive firefighting requires a ladder since interior attack on the fire can not be
accomplished due to roof collapse. Using a master stream from an aerial puts >1000
gpm of water on the fire, this equals 4 handlines.
65
