Katrina Nygaard brings both planning and urban design experience to her work, with an <br />emphasis on community engagement and environmental justice. Katrina uses design and <br />planning skills to translate the intricacies of complex, technical problems for the people <br />these problems most affect. Katrina uses critical -thinking and problem -solving to link <br />community needs with big picture goals. <br />Education <br />Master of Urban and MnDOT High Bridge Community Workshops, St. Paul, MN <br />Regional Planning, MnDOT Metro District plans to repave Smith Avenue, Dodd Road, and the iconic St. Paul <br />University of Minnesota High Bridge. To address the needs of all roadway users, MnDOT staff asked Stantec to engage <br />Humphrey School, communities in St. Paul, West St. Paul, and Mendota Heights. Katrina developed a collection <br />Minneapolis, MN, 2015 of informational boards and twoactivities that engaged stakeholders, identified their <br />concerns with the project, and educated the public aboutthe many road design options <br />Metropolitan Design available and the associated tradeoffs. Stantec designed a community outreach process that <br />Certificate, University effectively created two-way conversation. Participants left with a greater understanding of <br />of Minnesota College of the constraints MnDOT faces in a design process. MnDOT staff left with a clear sense of <br />Design, Minneapolis, MN, community desires regarding the project. <br />2015 <br />Cottage Grove Healthy Living Engagement, Cottage Grove, MN <br />BA, University of Chicago, Katrina worked with the City of Cottage Grove to develop and administer a survey about <br />Chicago, IL, 2013 opportunities for healthy living and food access in Cottage Grove. The survey was distributed <br />online and via post -card and has received over 400 responses. Katrina and the team's use of <br />Facebook Advertising for the survey helped to reach high numbers and diverse groups that <br />may not have participated otherwise. <br />26th & 28th Streets Bike and Pedestrian Imp rovemenis,Minneapolis, MN <br />Katrina assisted with community outreach for the City to understand public preferences <br />regarding the addition of protected bike lanes along a pair of one-way streets inMinneapolis. <br />These streets form a major east -west corridor across the city that traverses numerous <br />neighborhoods, hospitals, parks, and commercial nodes. The proposed bikewaysare intended <br />to improve local access to these destinations and pedestrian crossings. Katrina assisted in <br />public meetings and engaged with residents, community organizations and advocates <br />throughout the process. <br />Making Development Work: Tools for the Cleveland Neighborhood% Minneapolis, MN <br />To understand the impacts of new, community driven development for the Penn and Lowry <br />corridors in North Minneapolis, Katrina conducted a comprehensive corridor property <br />survey and case studies, and interviewed local business owners, government officialstand <br />neighborhood residents. She worked with the neighborhood association to develop a series of <br />tools and resources that educate local residents about the RFP process, forming <br />a cooperative, and parcel opportunities. By assuming a leadership role, the neighborhood <br />association can implement these tools to ensure future development serves their unique <br />needs.
