Watching the leaves turn beaudf'uI shades of red and aoId; waIclng to the crisp. cool air In the morning; enjoying the brilliant sun set- ting over CenteI. Lake full of a p setdn& the trees ablaze with a vibrancy of rich, warm colors. Now that most of the leaves have faUen on the ground, I treasure the "lake view" from my living room, rnaIcin& It s0me- times c:IIfftcuIt to work on the news1et- ter! Hunting season has begun and shots ring through the air as I sit 0ut- side on my garden swing with a hot, cup of coffee. feeling the nnI atm0s- phere for the first time In years. I treasure what the community and sur- rounding area provides. In. a sudden burst of eneray, I dusted off my bike and took of for the newly paved path by LaurIe LaMotte Park early one 1Omlng. Frwdng cold and near ten toneIerlng why In the world dld I think I needed that bike ride. the an- swer came soon. SIx miles Into my ride, I encountered a hunter. Perhaps In his late 60's, dressed In fun camInO, strapped with his shot gun and peda1- Ing an old bike with his faithful hunting dog running. brlsIdy beside him re- minded me of something Norman Rockwell would paint. We had a brief exc:f1an&e of words as we passed on the path. He hadn't shot at anything, and It appeared that It dldn't matter. He was just enjoying the morning and spendlng dme with his clog. It warmed me enouah to complete the rernalnlng few miles home. 4\ It' Out of curIoshr and having wlth- drawal symptomS of my short career at the Minneapolis AIrport, I decided to stop In at Surfslde Sea Plane Base located on RIce Lake In Uno Lakes. I was greeted by owrMr Bruce Hanson and enjoyed a pleasant visit with him and his wife, .Mim: Surfslde was built In 1940 and the Hanson's purchased It In 1970. Be- tween 50 and 60 planes are parked at Surfslde whlch Is the largest seaplane base In the UnIted States. SInce meeting the Hanson's, I've had the opportunhr to enjoy flying around the c:ommunity. CentervlIIe looks so large from above! Whether taking off and landing from the 2,000' grass landing strip or from RIce Lake, viewing CentervlIIe from the air durlna this dme of year, has been truly spec- tacular. Snow will be upon us soon and the snowmobilers I'm sure are prepar- Ing for their winter ac:dvlty. Doug Koppy, President of the RIce Creek SnowmobIle Trail Astoclatlon along with other members have been busy pi eparlng the trails for safe snowrnobl- Ung. Before the snow falls, signs are posted marIclng trails, stops, and cul- verts. Fencing Is Installed to keep snowmobilers of certain areas. this group of decIlcated snowmobile enthu- siasts spend countless hours on trail preparation and grooming. They malnt3ln their groomers and trucIcs, not only during the season, but off- season as well.
