Watching the leaves <br />turn beaudf'uI shades of red and aoId; <br />waIclng to the crisp. cool air In the <br />morning; enjoying the brilliant sun set- <br />ting over CenteI. Lake full of a <br />p setdn& the trees ablaze with a <br />vibrancy of rich, warm colors. Now <br />that most of the leaves have faUen on <br />the ground, I treasure the "lake view" <br />from my living room, rnaIcin& It s0me- <br />times c:IIfftcuIt to work on the news1et- <br />ter! <br />Hunting season has begun and <br />shots ring through the air as I sit 0ut- <br />side on my garden swing with a hot, <br />cup of coffee. feeling the nnI atm0s- <br />phere for the first time In years. I <br />treasure what the community and sur- <br />rounding area provides. In. a sudden <br />burst of eneray, I dusted off my bike <br />and took of for the newly paved path <br />by LaurIe LaMotte Park early one <br />1Omlng. Frwdng cold and near ten <br />toneIerlng why In the world dld I <br />think I needed that bike ride. the an- <br />swer came soon. SIx miles Into my <br />ride, I encountered a hunter. Perhaps <br />In his late 60's, dressed In fun camInO, <br />strapped with his shot gun and peda1- <br />Ing an old bike with his faithful hunting <br />dog running. brlsIdy beside him re- <br />minded me of something Norman <br />Rockwell would paint. We had a brief <br />exc:f1an&e of words as we passed on <br />the path. He hadn't shot at anything, <br />and It appeared that It dldn't matter. <br />He was just enjoying the morning and <br />spendlng dme with his clog. It warmed <br />me enouah to complete the rernalnlng <br />few miles home. <br /> <br />4\ <br /> <br /> <br />It' <br /> <br />Out of curIoshr and having wlth- <br />drawal symptomS of my short career <br />at the Minneapolis AIrport, I decided <br />to stop In at Surfslde Sea Plane Base <br />located on RIce Lake In Uno Lakes. I <br />was greeted by owrMr Bruce Hanson <br />and enjoyed a pleasant visit with him <br />and his wife, .Mim: <br />Surfslde was built In 1940 and the <br />Hanson's purchased It In 1970. Be- <br />tween 50 and 60 planes are parked at <br />Surfslde whlch Is the largest seaplane <br />base In the UnIted States. <br />SInce meeting the Hanson's, I've <br />had the opportunhr to enjoy flying <br />around the c:ommunity. CentervlIIe <br />looks so large from above! Whether <br />taking off and landing from the 2,000' <br />grass landing strip or from RIce Lake, <br />viewing CentervlIIe from the air durlna <br />this dme of year, has been truly spec- <br />tacular. <br />Snow will be upon us soon and <br />the snowmobilers I'm sure are prepar- <br />Ing for their winter ac:dvlty. Doug <br />Koppy, President of the RIce Creek <br />SnowmobIle Trail Astoclatlon along <br />with other members have been busy <br />pi eparlng the trails for safe snowrnobl- <br />Ung. Before the snow falls, signs are <br />posted marIclng trails, stops, and cul- <br />verts. Fencing Is Installed to keep <br />snowmobilers of certain areas. this <br />group of decIlcated snowmobile enthu- <br />siasts spend countless hours on trail <br />preparation and grooming. They <br />malnt3ln their groomers and trucIcs, <br />not only during the season, but off- <br />season as well.
