Only children entering the 4th Grade <br />this Fall were eUgible to register. <br />The Camp, which has been operating in this area for seven consecutive <br />years. is possible due to the cooperative effort from Uno Lakes Park and <br />Recreation; Centennial Lakes and Uno Lakes Police Department; along with <br />Lexington and Centennial Rre Department. Community support is received <br />to provide the participantS with snacks. lunch. medals. t-shirts and an assort- <br />ment of safety products to take home. <br />Children begin arriving at camp with their bicycles at 6:30 a.m. for regis- <br />tration. Bikes are labeled. helmets issued and children are assigned to one <br />of four teams. Each team is sporting a specific color, flag and four counsel- <br />ors from the various sponsoring departments. Counselors are dressed in <br />street clothes. so the <br />children are unaware <br />that they are police <br />officers or fire fighters. <br />After registration, <br />the teams gather on <br />- the field for a &roup <br />photograph and a <br />briefing as to what to <br /> <br /> <br />day. During the brief- <br />ing. a helicopter from <br />North Ambulance <br />lands in the field. The <br />paramedics give tours, <br />and talk about what <br />they do. The teams continue with dasses on Personal Safety, Bicycle Safety, <br />Safe Escape House and a Drug Program. Classes are taught by police ofR- <br />cers. firefighters. paramedics, Uno Lake Park and Recreation staff, NSP, <br />DNR and staff from Wargo Nature Center. A trailer set up as a simulated <br />burning house. teaches children escape methods. Personal Safety dasses <br />give Information on Stranger Danger and Good TouchIBad Touch and how <br />to handle these situations. During the Bicycle Safety class, helmets are sized <br />, to each child and they ride their bike through a course,. whIe praaidng the <br />use of hand signals and safe riding techniques. <br />After a lunch of hotdogs. chips and soda. the teams continue the day with <br />four more dasses: 8ectr1ca1 Safety, Outdoor Safety, Water-Safety and Ant <br />AId.
