<br />I Summer 1998 <br /> <br /> <br />tPieycle .Salety ~. <br /> <br />I~I Did you know the Minnesota State Law requires )'llu to ride your <br />bike on the right hand side of the road, but when walking you should <br />be on the left hand side? <br /> <br />More and more'people are riding bicycles today. It is very important that <br />we follow the state laws on bicycle riding and teach the young kids the laws <br />of bicycle safety. According to the Minnesota State Sta~te a bicycle is <br />considered a vehicle. . The bicycle rider must obey all the rules of the road as <br />a vehicle driver. Here are some very important laws that everyone should <br />know and follow: <br />. Always ride on the right-hand side of the road. <br />. When riding at night yoq must have a white headlight and a red taillight <br />. Must have proper working brakes. <br />. Must use hand signal when turning or stopping. <br />. Obey all street and traffic signals. <br />During the day, wear bright-colored clothing. At night, wear light-colored or <br />reflective clothing. Make sure you wear a helmet It helps people see you <br />and protects your head. When crossing the road, look left, right, and then left <br />again. Always lock your bicycle, whether you're gone only a few minutes or <br />//'few hours. Don't allow your kids to leave their bicycles in the yard. Make <br />\~ after a bicycle is ridden it is put in a secure place or locked. Make sure <br />you always ride single file. <br /> <br /> <br />Relay for Life <br /> <br />The Quad Cities anf:! American Cancer Society <br />announces Relay for Life. Are you willing to stay <br />up all night to help fight cancer? On August <br />7th-8th, teams of family members, coworkers, <br />colleagues and friends will gather at Centennial <br />High School for the Quad Cities Relay for Life. <br />Participants camp out around the track when <br />they aren't taking their turn walking, jogging or <br />running. They also take part in other activities and entertainment <br />Relay for Life is a non-competitive event making it available for <br />anyone to participate. Some join to celebrate cancer suivivorship, while <br />many participate in honor of a loved one who lost their battle with cancer. <br />Others join for the exercise, camaraderie and fun. <br />Teams are asked to collect donations before the event Funds raised <br />enable the American Cancer Society to expand its services to cancer <br />/..J'--iQlatients and their families, to offer more educational programs about <br />i.. leducing people's cancer risk, and to fund cancer research PI?~' The <br /> <br />It is an awareness builder as well. <br />For more information call Dawn Madden at 644-1224. <br /> <br /> <br />CitJ (if Centerville -Page 91 <br /> <br />Propen, To <br />Deferral for <br />SeuIor CItIzeDs <br /> <br />Participation in this. program <br />is voluntary.
