On April 17, the
Minnesota Design Team will be in CenterVi11e
for a screening visit. The purpose of the
sdeening visit is to discuss how the Design
Team could help us create a shared vision for
the downtown and address other community issues. If Centerville is
selected, which is based on our application and the screening visit, then
the Design Team willretmn for a weekend visit in the fall. That's when
everyone in our community will be encouraged to become involved in
a fast-paced work session. It Win be a major event you wo~'t want to '
miss! By the end of the weekend visit, Design Team members will
present and explain their drawings for the revitalizing downtown based
on the ideas expressed by the community.
The Minnesota Design Team is a volunteer organization of
professional architects, landscape architects, and community
development experts. The team selects four cities per year for these
weekend visits. Design Team members do this work in addition to
theit regular jobs. It's important to 'them that they know the comm\1ni-
. ties will welcome their efforts. Approximately fifteen of their
members will participate and aCtually live in town with host families
during the weekend visit, from Thursday evening to Sunday morning.
. Although they do not receive any pay, the cost for the weekend visit is
$3,500, which covers the organization's expenses. That's a real
bargain considering the value of their work is wen over $25,000.
Centerville's Downtown Revitali7.ation Committee submitted an
application ~ the, Minnesota Design Team in January. It included
general information, photographs of the. communitY, answers to
. questions, and many letters showing broad-based community support.
Even the fifth grade .students at Centerville Elementary School got
involved and wrote le~ of support! The Downtown RevitJll;7~tion
Committee is excited about the screening visit on ApriL17. We
welcome and encourage anyone who is interested to attend!
The members of the Downtown Revitali7,aUon Committee include
Tun Rehbine, Dan Tourville, John Magill, Paul Montain, Mary Capra,
Theresa Brenner, Mary Jo Helmbrecht, Jim March and Bill Bisek. For
more information, call City Hall at 429-3232.
