Unless they have reason to call the police, many of our community members rarely have cause to meet or talk
with a police officer. Most of our community members don't know what it is like to be a police officer or what
CLPD officers do in our small community on a daily basis. Our social media efforts have helped us reach out
to our community in ways that were not possible in the past. Every week we reach thousands of people with
our posts, stories, pictures, and public safety messages. These efforts have allowed our community to see and
understand what we do like never before.
Over the last 3 years, we have grown our Facebook following from about 600 followers to 4,731 followers at
the time of this report. Many of those who follow our Facebook page live or work in our community, and we
regularly hear from citizens about how much they enjoy and appreciate the page. In the beginning of 2018,
we set a goal to expand our social media reach by starting an Instagram page. In 2018 we built that page from
scratch to more than 1,000 followers at the time of this report.
Our social media work lets us "roll down the window" of our squad and let people see what it truly means to
be a police officer at CLPD. We share photos of our beautiful community. We share stories of great police
work by our staff. We talk openly and honesty about the struggles that we face as a community and our
emotions as we deal with the trials and tribulations of police work. We pass on important public safety
information and crime alerts. We also share information on in-progress incidents when necessary and tell our
success stories.
Our social media team includes Lt. Russ Blanck, Sgt. Bill Jacobson, Officer BJ Stepan, Officer Katy Mannin, and
Office Supervisor Kathy Honkomp. This team consists of staff from all three shifts, which helps us tell stories
from patrol and pass on critical public safety information at the push of a button on an almost around-the-
clock basis.
We are very proud of our social media program.
