CITY OF CENTERVILLE REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Agenda Item # Department: Requested Council Meeting Date: April 28, 2021 Public Works/Engineering _WS 1 TITLE OF ISSUE: City Street Speed Limits BACKGROUND AND SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: For many years, the speed limit on city streets was controlled by a statutory minimum of 30 mph. That speed limit could only be changed through a speed study, conducted by MNDOT. Whatever the result of that study was to be the posted speed. The city had no choice (other than to request the study, not knowing the outcome). Recently, the MN Legislature changed that law to allow cities to set their own speed limits on city streets. Each year, the city receives a handful of complaints regarding speeds on city streets. On several occasions, we have monitored speeds, electronically. The results have consistently shown that the 85th percentile speed is well below 30 mph. We have again had inquiries about lowing the speed limit. Now that the city has the ability to do so, we thought it would be worth a discussion. City staff does NOT recommend changing our city-wide speed limit.
