Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored the public observance of Fire Protection Week. During Fire Prevention Week, firefighters ramp up their public education and outreach efforts in an effort to decrease casualties caused by fires. The Centennial Fire District (CFD) will be at the schools teaching students throughout the week, and posting messages on their Facebook page emphasizing that "Fire won't wait. Fire Prevention Week is observed every year during the week of October 9t' in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871 and lasted for two days. The fire caused more than 250 deaths, left 100,000 people homeless, destroyed more than 17,000 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. Don't wait to plan your escape.
