CITY OF CENTERVILLE REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Agenda Item # Department: Requested Council Meeting Date: January 24, 2024 Administration VII.4a. TITLE OF ISSUE: Organizational Memberships - Metro Cities BACKGROUND AND SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Centerville has traditionally, been a member of Metro Cities; an off-shoot of the League of Minnesota Cities, focused on legislative policy. The organization works with legislators to ensure they understand the implications of proposed legislation on cities. Last year this group was particularly important as a record number of bills were introduced. Having this voice in St. Paul is invaluable. During deliberations on the public safety bill, our relationship with this organization allowed us to get our Chief of Police in front of the legislative committee to testify regarding the need for the funding formula to take into account cities who utilize JPAs for their police and fire departments. This testimony, along with others', affected changes to the initial draft of the bill which secured over $170,000 in funding.
