City of Centerville
Park & Recreation Meeting Minutes
November 1, 2023
event. Committee Member Peterson then had a meeting with City Administrator Statz regarding
the vision for this event. They determined that it might be best to leave it as a small hometown
community event, run with volunteers, rather than focusing on making it a larger, more competitive
event which would add additional funds to be expended and perhaps exclude some local participants
and the committee members concurred. A company, called Bending Branches, has donated a high-
quality paddle for the past five years and hope they will continue to be a sponsor. Committee
Member Peterson stated that Ms. Larson had some great ideas when they previously spoke and he
will again meet with her to discuss if she would like to be involved with this event in other ways and
report back at the next meeting.

2. Trail Closure Signage Î West Side of Centerville Elementary

A safety request had been received by City Administrator Statz from the Centennial Elementary
Principal Marken, along with CLPD Chief James MorkÓs approval, to place signage closing the trail,
at each end (Centerville Road & Lakeland Circle), during school hours to ensure the safety of the
students while outside.

It has been determined that the trail alongside the school is on school property and is maintained by
them. A suggestion was made to have the language on the sign read ÐNo LoiteringÑ rather than
ÐTrail Closed During School HoursÑ, thus allowing trail users to use the trail during those hours.

Motion by Chair Errickson-Grahek, seconded by Committee Member Seeley to Recommend
to Council the CommitteeÓs Support for the Request of the School District but recommend the
usage of ÐNo LoiteringÑ rather than ÐTrail Closed During School HoursÑ. All in favor. Motion
carried.

3. 2024 SHIP Grant Submission Î Bike Repair Station

Motion by Chair Errickson-Grahek, seconded by Committee Member Akpan to Direct Staff
to Submit a SHIP Grant Application for funding of a Bike Repair Station to be installed in one
of the parks on the north side of city. All in favor. Motion carried.

4. Name a Snowplow Contest

Chair Errickson-Grahek and Committee Member Fuchs spoke prior to the November meeting and
have the following ideas for consideration:

a. Age Range: this will be open to all Centerville residents regardless of age;
b. Contest Length: the balloting will begin on November 12 and end on November 30;
c. How to Enter: paper ballots will be provided in the lobby at City Hall and electronically on
the City website; possibly other sites (see Promotion below); funny names are encouraged;
d. Promotion: City website, City newsletter, Utility Bill insert, Flyers (posted in area
businesses), and possibly newspaper articles regarding information about the contest and at
the conclusion with the winner and new name.(QR form & link);
e. Judges: P & R Committee Members and staff from Public Works;
f. Judging and Announcement of Winner: by December 15;
Page 2 of 5
