Traffic
Q: How much traffic will it produce?
A: A traffic study is being conducted and will estimate the trips in and out of the
development, as well as some imagined development of the property to the south (west of
Centerville Road, north of Main Street).
Q: Will this require a traffic signal at Main Street and Centerville Road?
A: The development’s traffic study will examine this question. There are specific
criteria that must be met to allow a traffic signal. The intersection was designed for a
future traffic signal when it was reconstructed in 2009.
Q: Main Street is already too busy, why would we allow something that adds more
traffic?
A: Since 1994, traffic on Main Street has increased from around 5,000 trips per day to
around 11,000 trips today. On the graph of traffic over the last 30 years, you can see a
steady growth of traffic volumes on Main Street. Around 2014, traffic began increasing
rapidly, continuing until the pandemic sent people home and began an era of less traffic
on all roads. What’s notable, is that this rapid increase in traffic volume came during a
time when Centerville platted no new lots. From 2007, to 2018, Centerville did not add a
single lot, yet we saw traffic on Main Street grow substantially (from 8,300 to 11,000).
This is a strong reminder of the fact that Centerville’s contribution to the traffic on Main
Street is minimal compared to the impacts from developments in Hugo, Lino Lakes and
Blaine. Stopping development in Centerville, will not stop traffic growth on Main Street.
