Teresa Bender
From:Teresa Bender
Sent:Tuesday, February 18, 2025 1:17 PM
To:Melissa Lawlis
Subject:Donation - Specific Project (Fiore Tree)
Attachments:Teresa Bender.vcf
Dear Mel:

This letter is being forwarded to you as you are currently the President of the Centerville Lions and we are
entrusting that this request will go before the organization for consideration.

The definition of Placemaking - Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and
management of public spaces. Placemaking capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential,
with the intention of creating public spaces that improve urban vitality and promote people's health, happiness,
and well-being. It can also draw the public’s attention - “need to see” the uniqueness of the amenity assisting in a
distinction for the community. This enhances the community along with enhancing the business/downtown
area. In 2021, the City’s Economic Development Authority (EDA) installed 27 banner and holiday wreaths on the
light poles in downtown along Main Street. In 2024, they commissioned Simple and Grand to install 12 flowerpots
along Main Street & Centerville Road aiding in the area’s beautification.

For several months, the Parks & Recreation Committee has completed research on the installation of a Fiore Tree
at Cornerstone Park within the walk-way/flower bed area. In 2009, the proposal for the park contained a
fountain. The fountain was removed from the project as it was too costly. The Committee feels that with approx.
11,000+ vehicles pass by daily, the park is a focal point of the community along with the lake. CSAH14/Main Street
has a vehicle count of 11,000+ vehicles making the area one of the most visible entrances to the community. First
impression of a sort, and this is where we want to bring the community to experience such things as the downtown
businesses, Bald Eagle Water Ski Club, Main Street Market, and the Centerville Elementary.

The Committee obtained community input throughout 2024 and followed Council’s Goals and Strategic planning
regarding placemaking for the City. The Committee held discussions at their meetings regarding an art piece/bust
of a community founder, a memorial wall – recognizing those who have helped shape the community, etc. At that
time, the Committee and the Council both authorized the purchase of a Fiore Tree in an amount not to exceed
$25,000.

1
