February 8, 2004

Minnesota DNR
Local Grant Committee

Dear Local Grant Committee:

I understand that construction of a trail is being proposed by the Centerville Park and
Recreation Committee that would connect the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park
trail system to the Hardwood Creek Trail that ends in Hugo.

I would like to add my voice in support of this new connecting trail. As a bicyclist, I
currently have two choices if! want to get to the Hardwood Creek Trail from Centerville.
I can bike along the very narrow shoulder of County Road 14 to Hugo-which is
extremely hazardous with the fast and frequent traffic and the on/off ramp to 35E--or I
can bike farther north along the shoulder of 20tl1 A venue, which also has a narrow
shoulder as well as several hills that make it impossible for speeding cars to see me
before they are on top of me. In both cases, I am afraid for my safety and I have to think
twice about whether I really want to take the risk.

The new connecting trail being proposed between Rick Creek and Hugo would be an
ideal solution to this problem and allow me to bike to Hugo to eat at Subway's, for
example, or to challenge myselfwith a longer ride to Wyoming without having to think
twice about my safety. I also think it would also be just the right distance for many
rollerbladers, skate boarders, runners/joggers, and skiers to go back and forth between
Centerville and Hugo.

Please approve this new trail. It would be a great asset to our community.

Sincerely,
/J--- .--;
/~~

TerryLJohnson
1784 Peltier Lake Drive
Centerville, MN 55038

+8
