Our goal is to work with cities, counties, individuals, businesses
and community groups across the area to turn citizens into life-savers.

A national study by the American Red Cross found that the majority of Americans have not taken
basic steps needed to "Get Ready" for an emergency or a disaster. Through "The Red Cross
Community Challenge" our chapter will work with local leaders to conduct a public awareness
campaign, provide information, training and resources, organize events and challenge residents to do
three simple things:
. Get a Plan
· Get a Kit
. Get Involved

"The Red Cross Community Challenge" will be a fun, high-profile opportunity for your
community, and an effort that will have something of value for all age groups and backgrounds. Cities
that participate in the campaign will benefit by engaging more local residents to:
· Get trained to be life-savers through First Aid, CPR or AED instruction;
· Have a plan and know what to do in a emergency;
· Have a kit and resources to help them get through an emergency;
· Become trained to be local Red Cross responders to help their neighbors when there is a
house fire, a tornado, flooding or other disaster.

We've already met with several mayors to discuss how communities can Get Ready in 2007. We'lI
also be hosting a Public Safety Summit Thursday, Jan. 18 for police and emergency managers. Ifwe
haven't contacted you yet, please call Chris Bums at 612-252-1031 so he can share our vision. I hope
you'll join us in this community-building effort to give Centerville residents the information and tools
to save lives.

Sincerely,

rg);~

Jan McDaniel
Chief Executive Officer

Get Ready!

30
