, Page 4 March 200 I Centerville: Preserving the Post while Focusing on the Future It's an unfortunate fact that when a neighborhood crime Neighborhood Crime Watch crisis goes away, so does enthusiasm for Neighbor Watch. Work to keep your watch group a vital force for community well being. Organize regular meetings that focus on current issues such as drug abuse, "hate" or bias-motivated vio- lence, crime in schools, child care before and after school, recreational activities for young people, and victim services. Organize community patrols to walk around streets or apartment complexes and alert police to crime and suspicious activities and identify problems needing attention. People in cars with cellular phones or CB radios can patrol. Adopt a park or school playground, pick up litter, repair broken equipment, and paint over graffiti. Work with parent groups and schools to start a McGruff House or other block parent program (to help children in emergency situations). Recognize residents of all ages who have "made a difference," and highlight community events. Work with local building code officials to require dead bolt locks, smoke alarms, and other safety devices in new and existing homes. Don't forget social events that give neighbors a chance to know each other: a block party, potluck dinner, softball game, or even a multi-family picnic. ~ r-::--'~ P~'-t P~ ~ V~ Q G We are one day closer to summer-really! Even with all of this snow, that doesn't hold back the energy of our youth in the commu- nity. I've enjoyed reliving my own child- hood memories watching the children play on the big snow banks piled high in the church parking lot! Yes, I've even gone OUt myself with the snowboard and climbed the hills too, just not as aggres- sively as in my younger years! The sounds of their laughter, mixed in with the snowmobiles whizzing by off of the lake have been well enjoyed during the past few month. Time does go by fast and school will soon be out for three months of vaca- tion for most students. It's not too early to begin planned activities to keep the kids busy for three months. The YMCA, and Wargo Nature Center are just a couple of organizations that will be pro- viding youth activities this summer in Centerville. A local resident has indi- cated an interest in starting a Kite Club which will include kite building and flying. Please watch for more details on upcom- ing activities posted in future issues of the le journal. Have you stepped outside during the wee hours of the morning lately? I'm talking about 3 a.m.? There's a beau- tiful silence that blankets Centerville with an incredible cinema in the sky of planets, stars and the great moon! Tak- ing a night walk recently with my son, we stopped to enjoy the moon light shining through an iceucle.
