State
Extension Recreation Specialist. Department of Recreation and Park Administration. Extension
Division, University of Missouri. funded by the U.S. Department of Interior. Bureau of Outdoor
Recreation, September 1972.

Need foe lIuidelines: An important element of outdoor recreation is quality of the experience.
One factor affecting quality is intensity of use of an area. Many natural recreation resources are in
danger of being lost due to over-use by an ever growing population.

Many parks experience heavy usage resulting in site erosion. and the need for relocation and
continuing repair of support facilities. A significant factor is the number of people an area can
accomodate without having its recreation potential diminished. Goal standards will help eliminate
some of these problems.

The foHowing guides for the various park and recreation areas are adapted from the National
Standards'" and other sources.

=-:National Park Recreation and Open Space Standards, edited by Robert D.
