He stated this is the first year for this event.
Mr. Bums reported that approximately a year ago, the American :Red Cross completed a
study and statistics prevailed that many Americans did not have a plan to exit their homes
in case of tire or where to meet om:e outside of their home. Mr. Bums stated that many
individuals/families did not have a kit containing a tbree-day supply of items in case of
emergency and many others have not taken a life saving class.

Mr. Bums explained that the American Red Cross is collaborating with communities to
provide resomces to empower residents to become lifesavers. He stated that it is the Red
Cross' strategy to empower individuals to do three basic things: get a plan, get a kit, and
get involved.

Mr. Bums reported that the Red Cross would provide resources to cities that are on board
to cJMisJ' free presentations on a variety of topics for aU age groups. He
commented that the American Red Cross conducts CPR Saturdays whereby individuals
in the commlmity are recruited to take CPR. training. Mr. Bums stated he understands
. many communities are already doing many of these things and an individuali7.ed plan
could be designed for the City ofCenterville.

Mr. Bums reported over 33 cities have joined or indicated they would join the Get Ready
Campaign. He explained that the American R.ed Cross requests that cities pass a
procIslmation and designate a volunteer to work one-on-one with the Red Cross. Mr.
Bums felt that the Red Cross' activities could blend with other City events if desired.

Mayor Capra questioned if the commitment from the City was to sign the proclamation
and host events with the Red Cross' participation.

Page 3 of to

3
